Hi I have a 1973 vespa, it's has I 200px engine in it. It has a new grip twist gear change, the front brake is on the left side and the clutch is on the right side. It was a none runner but I have got it running but on a test ride round my road has revealed that the gear change brake set up is weird. How expensive/hard is it to convert it to standard? You can see the set up in the picture. Any help would be super. Martin Attachments:

From that picture it's obviously been customised at some point.
I'd guess that it'd just be a case of swapping the cables over though.

Flippin' 'eck. If you're used to a std front brake on the right and you go to pull in the clutch without thinking ie.reacting normally you could end up in a big heap on the floor I'd think. As Nik says a swop side for side should be possible surely?
I use one of those garage defender locks too (as can be seen on the floor in the background).

Trust me its a weird thing to ride, i would swap them over but might be hard to pull the clutch whilst trying to twist the gear lever. I am going to try to put a standard gear and clutch lever back on but not sure wear to start !

Well with a fixed clutch position that might be tricky to operate as you say. Good luck!

Blimey! I'd just junk that lot and fit a proper Sprint/Super headset on it, gears and clutch will work just as they Mr Piaggio intended, sorted!

Should not be hard to fine, ebay, Scootertrader.com, there are also 2 good Facebook 'scooter parts' groups.
I'm guessing you have a Super from the date and what can see in the pic, a Sprint, Rally, GL headset would also fit, but see what you can find.
Ideally a complete one with the throttle and gear rods and cable guides still in place, you'll also need a speedo, headlight and rim of course..
That is so long as the OE forks have not also been modified in any way, can you post a pic of the top of the forks where it joins the bars?

Not hard really, bottom cup can be a bit of a sod to get out of the frame. I'd just try changing both sets of bearings (only cost a fiver) and see if that does the job before looking at doing the cups as well..

Where's a good supplier for all things vespa, wouldn't mind replacing the front damper whilst I'm at it? Is eBay as good place as any?

Sorted, stripped the front down, cleaned the top and bottom bearings re tightened them hey presto super smooth steering.the condition of the cups was spot on. I think they had been over tightened then it had been stood for a couple of years. Back for a retest tomorrow. What sort of cruising speed should I expect with a rebuilt 200 cc engine.? Mine seems a bit flat!

generally i dont buy new stuff off ebay, too much crap out there, beedspeed.com is a good, quick and fair priced source. what forks do you have? is it the OE set up with the visible spring? if so, it will always be bouncy unless you change to a stiffer spring, not something ive done yet, but considering it.
with a standard 200 it will be flat out at 60 - 65, on a hill or wind behind you just about make 70 on the clock.

Standard forks I think. In fairness my handling will be better now with the steering bearing sorted. I called beedspeed today about the bearings they were v helpful. The braking is wierd but I guess it a part of the charm!!!!

FTR I think that gear change is actually a twin throttle unit off an old Triumph or similar, I've seen them used before with similar problems.... ie, they're sh*te! I can understand why they swapped the levers over though.
If you want to keep the bars, look up a guy called Adrian (Ade) Newnham on Facebook and ask him how much for a gear change unit, they're amazing quality for the price and have appeared on a few custom scooters recently.

The changer is from beedspeed I have the reciept in the history folder, it works better with the clutch on the changer side, I think I can get used to it . Its all new so I have adjusted the cables twice seem to get better the more I use it. I do like the bars so I will check that dude out. Thanks for that. Martin.

That's not any Beedspeed changer I've ever seen, I've got two different ones of theirs, and neither look anything like that. Like I say, twin throttle cable set up, and tell Ade that Nik sent you. It'll not get it any cheaper if you mention my name though!
His fork clamps/yokes are a work of art too.

In fairness the changer works o.k even with massive winter gloves on! Although there was a guy at the mot station who was a vespa-lamberetta expert who said I has b*st**dised the scooter with my handle bars! I had to laugh I thought modifying was exceptable in the word of scootering!

Many thanks Nik. Well I have the film "Quadrophenia" to thank (?) for getting me into scooters in the first place!!! I figure we all like two wheels so whatever anyone wants to ride................... then I'm happy too. More the merrier.
