mate had 2 st leaking down the back of his engine (px200e). it was coming from between the carb box and lump, so fitted new genuine piaggio gaskets, made sure everything was tight, but the problem persists. any ideas how to fix this would be appreciated.

Could be a worn pipe? Run your fingers up the pipe to see if there is any oil on it.

I had this issue. Make sure the 'genuine' gaskets have a hole for the autolube oil. It has to get from the oil pump and down the channel in the crancase then up via the hole in the gasket to the matching hole in the carb. Mine didn't have a hole so oil got to the underside of the carb, soaked out & filled up the metal carb 'box' at the end & then dribbled out of the mixture screw grommet hole in the rear of the carb box all down the rear shock mount area & onto the floor!

checked the pipe and thats ok, the gasket does have the autolube hole, so i guess either the carb box or lump must have an un flat surface, will try to get a loan of a carb bottom to see if that cures it.

Had similar on my unmollested P200E
I only managed to cure it by removing the tiny step in the carb box casting which was preventing a perfect seal between carb and box no matter what gasket I tried.
this was on the carb to box joint and the oil was finding its way down the back of the engine
Removed the step, put the original gasket back in, sorted!

Have heard too of issues of the casing being not flat and three base carb gaskets being used to 'mask' the uneveness. Not an ideal situation, but if it works it's a cheap 'repair' and easy to do.

No, should not need sealant, the single paper gasket will do the job just fine if there is no other issue, just check the surfaces do not have a step on them as already mentioned.
