I think my push rod has broken up and ended up in the gearbox. So obviously there's a few rattles going on in there. Am I gonna have to split the case to get the shrapnel out?

I'd be impressed. No Vespas have pushrods and gearboxes.

I must be reading my Haynes manual for my car then.

Yup.
You only get push rods on four stroke engines. They're what operate valves. Vespa don't make four strokes with manual gearboxes.
The only thing I can think you may be referring to is the con rod - it holds the piston to the crank - and if that's snapped then your engine won't run at all.
Seriously though, if you have bad rattles from the bottom end, don't ride it, pull it to bits and take a look. I don't suppose you've changed the exhaust recently? If so, it could be pinking, it sounds like a handful of ball bearings in the top end and is a sign of imminent piston failure.

Should have explained myself better I suppose......this is the offending item www.sip-scootershop.com/en/products/push+rod+clutch+_87080000I have found a couple of pieces of it, have drained gear oil and stuck an air line down there, but obviously I wont know if its all out untill I start it up again. As I have a new Malossi clutch in thereand the springs are signifinately stiffer, I just couldnt seem to get the clutch right. . The clutch would bite whilst only letting the lever out a little bit. I suppose thats what done the said brass piece in?

Never heard it called a push rod before, it's usually just referred to as a plunger. Live and learn, thanks.
Have you pulled the clutch cover off and had a look? The symptoms you describe are all to familiar with Malossi clutches, they are stiffer by design, and unless you've a stupidly quick engine they're unnecessary. I don't mean 'bolt a kit on' stupidly quick, I mean 'bolt a kit on, port the casings, cut the crank, fit reeds, buy a racing exhaust and a big carb etc etc' type daft...!
Those brass plungers are designed to wear, and brass shouldn't shatter, it's too soft for that.
Pop the cover off, take a look. My money is on it being something else. But the clutch won't get any softer.

If the existing plunger (push rod???) were made in phosfor bronze it might 'shatter' I suppose?

I've only ever seen them mushroom and 'blur' across the end. It's possible though... I'd expect my clutch lever to stop working at the same time though, not just drag, as the plunger is a necessary part of the operation.

Yeah it did stop working,..... as soon as the plunger/push-rod/bloody brass bit etc etc fell to bits.
Anyway, I'm off to get a new one tomorrow as well as the pressure plate, as the wire clip was bust. AND I'm gonna put my old clutch springs back in too to maybe stop this happening again.

All sorted, no noise inside casing and a nice easy clutch. :0)
