Just acquired a px125 2008, been doing some tinkering here and there. I found the gear change was terrible very slack and difficult to find the gear. Changed the oil and tightened the cables and its transformed the ride. But i note the gears do not match up precisely with the indicator on the handlebar (4th gear is about 1/4" further around than the notch. Is this normal? If not I have a theory that the handlebar gear wheel may have worn and could be a smaller diameter than it should be - if so replacing it may make things line up again ? Any thoughts? It's most likely that the gears aren't lined up because the cables aren't set correctly, Slacken the one that shifts the gears towards first a bit, and tighten the other, they should come into line eventually.
I've never come across a falls neutral beyond fourth, I've found one on (IIRC) and early P125 between third and fourth though, perhaps the gearbox needs shimming up? Odd, but that's the only thing I can think of.
One last point, after you get used to the bike, you'll find that the gear markings are surplus and you don't need them but do it by feel. Like most things, it's an experience and knowing your machine thing - I know people who prefer to set their cables off line anyway, if you have wrist problems then it can make that a little easier for one thing. I've also known a Lammy owner who swore he prefered his cables set in reverse - so he just had to press down on the clutch lever to shift up, no clutching required on up shifts that way so makes it quicker to accelerate (In theory.. I'd not do it, I can't be arsed changing cruciforms for the fun of it)

Cheers I tightened cables and neutral is perfectly aligned as you go to 2nd its a little past the notch 3rd slightly further and 4th even further out of alignment. I just like things perfect so wondered if its normal. If not normal then i'll plan a gear shim job
Are gear shim an engine apart job??

That's a bit odd then.
Yes a gear shim is an engine split, but Vespa engines are the easiest in the world to work on, and this is a pretty simple job.

when setting the cables myself, i go with the lines under the handle bars, and then put a bit of masking tape on the top to stop it rotating when you've got a mate pulling the cable with pliers. and the dot,s are offset, again never had one go past fourth to find a false nutreul

Mine is spot on first, neutral, second, very slightly out of line on third and the same again on fourth but not by much. Certainly the first to second change can find a flase neutral occasionally beyong the 'normal' correct neutral but NEVER beyond the fourth gear.

Think i'll do the shims anyway, haven't got a haynes manaul but pretty handy mechncially just a few pointers needed - what's the process? What to measure? is it a case that the old shims just wear away? and how to determine what size shims to buy in advance of split?

Cylinder off, flywheel and stator off, unfasten engine bolts, split casings, remove circlip... The measurement for the amount of float is the Haynes manual. THat's pretty much it.
Remember to remove the selector box first though.
