Probably the worm gear in the hub, they can get chewed up. cost about £2 for a new one, access is easiest if you remove the wheel hub and push the worm gear out from the inside, you'll see if the teeth are gone, they are only plastic..
As a quick check before you take it apart, pull the speedo cable out and pop a small screwdriver down the hole, spin the wheel, the screwdriver will turn - or not, or only turn accasionally..

I have two speedos in a vague attempt to camoflage it!
I know what 30, 40 and 50 sound like, and anything faster isn't enough to worry speed cameras...

OK, that's me told I suppose given your avatar, speed isn't an issue for you. Or at least not in this context anyway! (sorry, too easy!)

Almost bound to be that plastic worm drive! Not exactly difficult to replace the speedo cable etc but a get-around-to-it job for some. Me? If it's fitted and supposed to work.................then work it must! Probably something to do with my ex-aircraft engineer mentality I guess.

(sorry, too easy!) just this evening replaced the worm drive in mine, sad to say that I can not stand anything not working which should work.. I am now going to spend the rest of the evening winding on the speedo to add the 100 miles I missed whilst the speedo was broke ;D

HA! I've got a 10 year old P2 with around 12000km on the clock. Or 4600km on the clock on alternate years.
I'm not planning on flogging it, so I don't see the slight discrepancy as a problem.

Paddy wanted to sell his scoot so Mick told him to wind the mileage back and he would get a better price for it. When he saw him a few days later he asked how he got on and Paddy said when he finished winding it back it only had 7,000 miles on the clock so he decided to keep it... ;D

I give it a month if it lives outside and it rains, three months if it lives in a garage.
For some reason I've decided to fix mine before Kelso, I must have money to throw away.

Well had to replace a mate's PX125 one last week. Sure enough, the cable had snapped low down, but the worm gear was bu**ered too. That telltale brown rusty water looking stain was on it even though it's a kind of nylon. I assume it all seizes up and tears the speedo cable before it strips a few gear flutes too. Cable including the outer was about 8 quid and the worm gear 1.80. Easy enough to change from the outside I found. Allstyles in Portsmouth reckon about a 2000 mile lifespan on that wormgear by the way.

I heard about a batch of metal worm gears being made. Sounds like a good idea until I heard that the gear could again start to strip a tooth but instead of just the nylon particles disintergrating the remains of these steel ones jammed the front hub. Over the handlebars was the result !!!

I think one of the older Vespas used a metal one, but it was found that they ate the hub drive! Much cheaper to replace a plastic worm drive than a hub.

SWBNIK
"If it's not broke, you're not riding it hard enough".
Reminds me of that other saying "If it ain't broke.................. fix it 'till it is" !

Peeps. My P2 been like a rev counter. Bought new Speedo drive from local dealer. Got worm and also a cog with similar grooves to plastic worm. Tried to sit it in both inner and outer hub, fits but proper loose. I'm thinking it should sit tight....Or not be there at all? Any tips please guys. My 1st full strip down inc engine, ain't it a joy!! Pink
