On a standard engine, waste of time and money.
On a tuned engine, waste of time and money unless it's a stupidly highly tuned engine.
On a racing engine, essential if you can get them set right.

Speaking from a clueless perspective, what advantage do they give over normal plates?

Last longer, and don't burn out under extreme torque. Completely wasted on standard engines, and (not run them myself so don't take this as gospel) apparently not as easy to set the biting point on.

sounds like a waste of money... even on a modified engine better to invest on the upper engine
