Been working on a 2002 piaggio zip 125..
the bike has sometimes needed a bit of easy start to fire up initially then after a min will start on the button, accellerates faster than my other zip and ticks over perfectly...
That was how I left it..
Yesterday I go down to my garage and the bike won't start full stop..
Normally (but not always necessary..) a quick squirt of quick start into the air box and she roars? into life..
Just would not go no matter what I did..
Time for a bit of component swapping to see if I can see where the problem was..
Swapped the whole carb assembly with the one off my other identical bike which runs perfectly...
The carb off the bike that suddenly doesn't run worked perfectly on my good bike and the carb off the good bike and fitted to the non-starting bike made no difference..
I checked the petrol taps to make sure they worked the same on each bike and they were identical...
I have a decent spark (it will jump 3or4 mil..) and when I take the plug out it is wet so fuel/easy start is getting through ok..
If I take the plug out and clean and dry it, then replace it and crank the engine, for a couple of seconds she has a half hearted go at starting.. sort of fires a few times then nothing..
I did this probably 10 ten times, trying absolutely no throttle, a smidge a bit more etc etc.. never got beyond a half hearted start for a few seconds right at the very outset and then nothing, just cranks endlessly..
It seems very odd as she has although initial start up sometimes required some assistance (easy start..), she always started easily, and once warmed up (litterally 2 mins..) she will start on the button and rev and ride well.
I thought i was dealing with a auto choke problem of some kind, which wouldn't be difficult to fix.. Now things seem very different.
The three things I was thinking of are..
contaminated fuel
No/low compression
engine flooding
weak spark
One thing seems certain, the plug is getting wet (possibly too wet..) and the mixture is not combusting.
There is what looks to be a healthy spark..
Does anyone know if low compression would cause this.. or does anyone have any other ideas..
the oil warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on and goes off when you crank the engine.
I changed the oil about a week ago and set the proper level so it definitely has good oil in it.
thanks for your help.
