PX 125: This condition is happening when I start from cold, not all the time. Fires up 3rd kick as usual. Put choke in. ride away. Within a few feet engine sputters and no acceleration. Ticks over, sounds like timing is out, but no throttle response. Kill engine and restart alls OK bike is 100%. First time this happened, I cleaned fuel filter/jets/air filter with carb cleaner. But the fault is still there. First problem I have had with this scooter in 2 years! Must be something simple (I hope ) any ideas will be appreciated.

Fuel line got a kink or air bubble in it? CDI getting tired?
If it was every time, then I'd say check the woodruff key behind the flywheel hadn't sheared, but if it runs OK otherwise then this won't be the problem. Check the plug and cap for damage?

Thanks for your ideas. I checked HT connections. Found coil earth was burnished. Checked plug looked ok (a little white). Started OK ran fine for 2 miles, then lost tickover, high revs ok. Checked plug, very white. Cleaned both jets. Started and ran well home. Checked plug, tan. Checked fuel filter, looked clean but blew through with carb cleaner.
Is there a simple way of cleaning the fuel tank?

That depends on whether you have access to a washing machine and some granite.
Do you know anyone that you can borrow a CDI off? They're the same as a PX/EFL/T5/Cosa, and are used on a lot of Lammy electronic conversion kits.

I am about to order a CDI. Concerned that the spark plug is just off white, so will adjust mixture. could it be some sort of pre-ignition?

That sounds VERY lean to me.
Are you running an expansion pipe and jetted up?

No she is running stock. It probably saved the engine! I used my old colortune to adjust the mixture. You were right it was was very lean. I turned the screw 1 1/2 turns before any yellow showed in the glass...... Took it for a test ride and all OK so far. I'll keep the CDI for next time. Thanks for your help

Running lean will hinder the starting too, hope that's cured it all

After giving the scooter a few days testing, I can report the following.
Starting in 2 kicks not 3. Choke must be returned at once. Throttle is smooth, used to bog down on take off.
Changing gears smoothly, used to rev between gears, with throttle closed.
Correct mixture is important!
