This problem has happened twice now...The Flywheel side bearing race has worked its way off the crank and the bearing has collapsed, causing the needle bearings to jam the crank ..After the 1st time ,i had the crank checked over for twisting and was ok,and replaced both side bearings... Loctite was used on the new race , but it happened again on the way back from IOW. All local scooterists i have spoken to have not heard or seen this happen before ....It is a standard P200 crank with slightly modified barrel, head & piston..and Vespa bearings used .. Any ideas why ,and any solutions will be more than welcome.

Sounds more like a casing problem than a crank one to me. Check for scoring on the bearing seat.

Hi Unfortunatly i have seen this before, it was caused by badly machined casings, have you checked you casings are matched. The crank is not running true to the casing holes for the bearings. The only real way of checking is stripping casings and getting the checked by an engineering shop.
Good luck
ps when it goes wrong badly its normally the end of the engine, nothing survived off the last one i saw.

Are you on about the actual inner race that fits to the crank? The only way that could possibly come loose is due to expansion through excessive heat or that the crank shoulder has been damaged previously while taking the old one off?

Thanks for all the input ....casings are matched and came from a trusted friend..After the first time it happened i had the crank checked & proved to be true ....The issue of overheating has been mentioned before...( it is the sleeve that fits on the crank & sits inside the bearing).I have split the casings again, & taking to local scooter genius & hero (diablo Al) to check out this week ....Will report back with findings ... ;D

Sounds like the bearing seat on the crank has worn down. When the new inner track is fitted it should be a very tight knock-on fit.For me it would be a new crank.

Think it may be a new crank anyway...tho the crank was brand new & only done minimal mileage before it happened the 1st time and when the race was fitted it was a tight knock on fit and a generous helping of loctite.

Thaks for all replies...Still no further forward with problem..have had casings checked over & seem to be ok...so going for a new crank & complete strip & respray of scoot over winter months, so will just put it down to bad luck , and hope for a better new year.
