Hi there,
I am new on this forum, so I will start by saying hello to all of you ;D
I have a 1979 Vespa P125X and am currently doing some work on the engine. My scooter has been jumping out of gear for a month or so, and it required the cruciform changing so that is my main reason for stripping.
I placed a reed valve on the engine a while ago due to a leaking disk valve but intend to port the casing correctly to match up with the Mollossi reed valve assembly. Today I have dropped the crank off to the local engineering shop, and they are going to machine it to suit the reed valve (IE chamfer so that it is open all of the time)
My question is: I feel that the scoot will need up gearing due to the Pinasco 180 top end I have on it. Along with the newly ported engine, a performance exhaust and the Delorto PHB carb, I feel that it now has the power to cope with a higher gear ratio.
I know that one way of doing this is to change the clutch. I have counted the teeth on my clutch and it has 22. Am I right in thinking that 23 is the highest you can go to, and if it is change to a clutch with more (or less teeth), will I have to change the gear it mates with on the gearbox input shaft??

welcome,
I don't think i ever ridden a two wheel which I didn't wish it had an extra gear on it.. even more so, a modified vespa... regarding ratio, I really have no idea
regarding the gears- yes, if you change one, you always have to change his companion gear as well

Count the teeth on the primary before you do anything else kid,if you're running 22/67 then I'd leave it at that. The 23 tooth clutch drive gear won't mesh with the primary and it'll destroy your gearbox. Unless you plan to ride at full chat everywhere I can't see a need to upgear anyway, with the 180 kit on your standard box you'll have improved acceleration and it'll be better uphills and into headwinds, up gear and it'll struggle.
