Hey all, I'm new here, managed to pick up a 2003 ET4, my first scooter, not the most stylish of the Vespas but it gets me to work!
However, we already have a few niggling problems, nothing seeming too major, also made worse by by total newness to all of this.
Firstly, the speedo has already broken, I think I'm going to attempt to fix this myself, as its going to cost around £50 for time and parts at the local dealer, or £5 and some of my time if i do it myself. Looking on guides on the net, I should be able to manage this, and it will help me learn the ins and outs of Vernon (the Vespa)
Secondly, oil issues. We need a top up, I am only just in the recommended level. However can I just top it up with the recommended type of oil, which may be different from what the previous owner used, or should I go for a whole oil change?
Does this also apply for the rear oil?
I must say after checking the rear oil dipstick, the water looked pretty thin and watery, is this a sign of old oil degradation?
Thanks everyone, apologies for my newness!

Vernon is a great name for a scoot. I'm new too so not really best qualified to answer your questions, but I'm sure someone will be along soon.

hi,
you can top it up with whatever good grade 4 stroke engine oil, preferably semi-synthetic but i would just start from scratch and replace it all to new, that way you know whats inside.
topping it up with a different brand cant hurt assuming what you got in is 4 stroke oil.
as to the rear, if you are referring to the gear box, you should use gear box oil, which is a bit different , and has a unique smell as well (sulfur) . in any case i would replace that oil as well.

Engine oil is 5w-40 fully sythetic ( halfords do this for bikes) There's also a spin on oil filter to change & a net filter to wash out Gear oil is 80w-90 GL4 or 5 & can be done without removing wheel or exhaust
