Had a rather unpleasant experience yesterday. While riding my restored 68 Sprint at about 30mph my back wheel fell off and I followed shortly after, skidding across the road. Thankfully the only things hurt were my backside and my pride but had a car been traveling in the other direction it could have been a lot worse. A passing taxi driver/fellow scooterist pulled over (cheers for that if you read this) and had a look at the errant wheel and noticed that the holes that the bolts attached the rim to the hub were oval so presumabely this was a 'disaster waiting to happen'. What I'm wondering is was this something wrong with the rim, the wheel or a maintenance failure on my part? All advice gratefully received so hopefully I can avoid something similar in the future.

Glad you are ok... Oval holes usually means that the rim was loose on the hub and has been moving around on the studs damaging the holes.. Check the studs on the hub very carefully, these may well be worn as well, if so, bin it. Use nylock wheel nuts

Glad you're in once piece mate. How's the damage to the scoot?
Less than impressed when my local scoot shop changed my mud-guard but neglected to put the washers back on the for the wheel rims.

Thanks for all your good wishes. Scoot didn't come off too badly, a few scratches, the front wheel isn't aligned with the handlebars which might prove tricky to repair and obviously it needs a new back wheel!! On a lighter and completely unrelated note I see the much anticipated Specials reunion is now official!!!

glad you're in one piece! could of ended differently
as for the wheel, and as bryno said, the rim bolts were a bit loose whats weird about it, that it happened suddenly you shouldve felt the vespa a little shaky some time before it happened ...

Had a near escape earlier in the year after i found that ,whoever the mechanic was who serviced my scooter, had put a split pin that was way too thin in the rear wheel, and not tightened the hub nut enough.
Glad you're ok. Safe riding all.

Thanks again. Nuts were duly checked today on my other ride. What are these nylock wheel nuts of which you speak? Can they go on any scoot?

Nylock nuts... As the name would suggest, they have a nylon insert which helps them lock into position. Once they're on they are very secure. And yes, they can go on any scoot.
