Hi there. Just got myself a T5 and while it was fine while I test-rode it - admittedly not for long mind - I've got a bloody problem with it: boo hoo!
Basically it jumps out of 2nd and 3rd gear when the revs are at moderate and above. 1st is defo okay and 4th seems to be too. I've checked the clutch cables and all that.
Haynes tells me the detent mechanism may be worn or damaged; the crucifom might be worn or the gear pinions are worn/damaged.
So guys, and I know this is a punt, from your experience, what is most likely to be the problem? And about how much is it likely to cost to get it a. looked at and b. fixed? I really hope a mechanic won't need to spend long looking it over and doign the work. My problem is that I'm not mechanically minded, and even if I was I don't have a workshop space to be taking the bloody engine apart and buying the thing has skinted me.
This might be an added complication but it has a 172 Malossi kit with a Cosa clutch.
Hope I can call on your pooled wisdom! Cheers.

hi there it does sound like the cruciform or it could be a worn pin on the gear selector if its the cruciform then its a engine out job and split the engine as for the kit and clutch there not a problem it sounds worse than what it is good luck ferdy

Hi
Sounds like the cruciform to me, and if your not that way inclined then you will needs a few quid and a good vespa mechanic. Its not a difficult job as long as you know what your doing try looking at scooterhelp .com and see if that makes you feel like having a go.

that sounds a little steep when you think a cruciform is about a tenner and a couple of quid for a gasket and about a couple of hours work

Cheers guys. I'm gonna take the advice I've been given and use it to haggle with a mechanic about the number of hours it should take. eg. a couple. As Elvis says the parts are cheap as chips - if it is the cruciform. After looking as SCooterhelp.com I would have a go myself if I had a bloody garage and bench to do the work in and on.

remember your mechanic can hit other problems when stripping engine seized bolts etc

if you are going to the trouble of splitting the engine sensible thing to do is replace the oil seals and bearings, check the crank for wear etc,
If cruciform has gone (AFAIK the T5 uses a more robust cruciform than earlier PX motors) then it's probably seen some action, you'll be kicking yourself if you have to strip it again in a few months...
P.S personally, I'd not try and haggle, you want the guy to do a good job and guarantee the work, not cut corners because you screwed him to the ground, just go with someone you trust. Dont think £150 is bad assuming that covers checking all componts for wear and guaranteeing the job when it's done..

I would agree totally £150 seems quite reasonable to me especially if you get him to drop in some new seals and bearings why he's there. A friend of mine who is quite good with engines did his a little while ago, put the cruiciform in the wrong way round by mistake and wrecked his gearbox cosy a bit more than £150 to fix the mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

£150 sounds great if hes getting bearings seals etc but the guy has stated its skint him buying it so hes on a budget but i must agree if your going to split your engine you may as well get it right first time and replace the lot

Yes, you're right. It's sensible that if I'm paying the labour to open up then get everything right after it's put back in then I shoudl get other stuff done. Cos I'm skint I might try to sell the thing (being straight up about the problem) and maybe someone who has the kit and time to sort it out themselves will take it off my hands. Then I'll buy another but be more thorough on the test-ride. I'm not that fussed about all the fancy modifications, I just need ot be able to get to work and get some practice in for my bike test, boo hoo. Strike up the violins chaps...
So honestly guys, approx how much might I be able to get for this in it's current state? The bodywork is moderate (paint faded the odd spot of rust) but with a malossi kit, cosa clutch and SIP performance exhaust.
Cheers.

Well the wind has changed and so has my thinking. The best price I could get in London is a garage that charges £40 an hour labour plus VAT. They reckon 4-5 hours to check it all over, do the work, replace oil seals, gasket, etc. About £300 in total - if it's just the cruciform. That seems a lot to me, cos of low cashflow I could put it on the dreaded credit card for a few months. I'll be in trouble with the missus mind...

Got to be honest you are taking a chance with any scooter second hand that you dont know the history on. A cruciform is where and tare so nothing unsual, if you sell and buy again you never know you could get worse. As they say better the devil you know? ??

Well well, the fun continues.
I need 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear cogs and a new engine casing. Flywheel side had a bodge repair that had the mechanic's eyes a popping. case had cracked all the way around where the flywheel bearing goes. Been bodged with some sealant and just fell out when the bearing was pushed!
Anyway, I'm looking for a new engine now, then split the old one for parts, hoping to get a few quid for Malossi 172 kit.
Beer is easing the pain of buying an absolutely duff scoot!
Anyone got an engine? lol.
