When I had an accident a fair whack back my insurance company wrote it off based on a crazy repair quote (well over a grand) from Carole Nash.
It was far from a write off, so with the payout from the other parties insurance I paid them the scrap value and made a decent profit after repairs.
Didn't have to re-register it. Or if I did, I wasn't aware I had to and it's not caused me any problems (have renewed insurance, tax etc several times without indicent).
Not sure about the MOT as my scoot is a 2006 PX so I'm exempt for a while.

As far as I can remember from the days of my former employment, if a vehicle is written off it has to be issued with a new V23 to be road legal. This matches up with what Ferdy was saying above.

Hi There are 3 catergories of write off's if its classed as a Cat C then you need do nothing just repair, if its a B or an A then you may need to talk to the DVLA.

Ah, that explains it. Presume mine was a class C then, or a cannabis write off even

thanks for that. devo's story is more or less the same as mine. it is a class c write off but the damage is minimal. i don't want to sell it so having a Qplate doesn't really bother me as its only used for commuting to hell er i mean work on. i'll call into my local scooter shop and have a word with them as they said it'd only cost around 300 quid to get it looking ok again.(this was before the write off tho). if its not worth it then i'll break it down or just lob it in the canal................ thanks again for all info

A class A or B write off cannot be reurned to the road. A class C can. For example, a scoot worth £500 is repairable, but will cost £600 to repair. The insuarance company will write it off as un-economical to repair. If it is repaired, it may need to be inspected before it is allowed back on the road ( not an M.O.T test ), at a centre which inspects kit cars etc.

my scoot is or should i say was worth 1200 ish (which i got back) but because of the broken brake lever/smashed speedo glass/ munched up mudgaurd/smashed mirror/dented carrier/smashed indicator/ buckled wheel and a right load of scratcthes they wrote her off due to the labour costing to much if they had to strip it down and respray it and replace all the bits n bobs. they did try to get me to miss certain things out ie the speedo/mirror/carrier and scratches so it wasn't written off but i wasn't having that as why should i be out of pocket because some idiot couldn't be bothered to look properly before reversing(he even had to walk past it to get in his van). i have most of the bits knocking aroung my shed so to get it bodged up and legal again wont cost to much. i have been told that i'll need a VIC before getting it road legal tho and that a cat c write off goes on the log book but as i've said previously it doesn't bother me as its only my slave scoot. thanks for the replies ,you scoot people give me faith in man kind.

That's interesting. There is nothing added to my logbook about it being a write-off.
The process with me was that the other parties insurance assessed the astronomical quote I had and then sent an independent inspector out to the bike, he agreed that the cost of repair when taking into account labour costs outweighed the value of the bike (which wasn't the case if you take it to the right place so I wasn't complaining!).
That was it then, I got the work done, got a cheque, got back on the bike and rode off into the sunset. At what point should the DVLA have become involved?

i was only told about the cat c going on the log book by a chap at work who to be honest with you knows everything about everything so i shall take that with a pinch of salt. i have spoken to someone else and they said the same as you did devo so i'll get it sorted and get it back on the road asap. i should get it back this week sometime so hopefully all will go well. i don't know much about insurance claims as in 18 years of whizzing about i have never had any kind of accident intil this.

got it back and am really unsure about things now. some people say i just get it done and ride off into the sunset others say get it done and i need an MOT and others say i have to send my logbook back to DVLA and re apply for it. i've phoned my insurance and the chap i spoke to said he didn't know(some company they've turned out to be}. i put the phone down and rang again and the next person said they were unsure(its based outside uk so i suppose its not written on a card for them to use). i tried ringing DVLA but you need a masters degree to get through them automated calls so i gave up. i might just turn it into a go cart and join the local layabouts up the field..........................................

Ring DVLA on 01792 783214. It's the exports department, but they answer the phone very quickly. No automated switchboard, they might transfer you or answer themselves.
