have you taken the switch off, do that and you will see if the contacts in the back are touching and completing a circuit even when the plunger is out.. new switch is just a few quid..

If its a PX Disc you may find the brake pedal sticky and doesn't fully return to the 'off' position. Pull it up by hand and observe the plunger moving in the brake switch (easier when you aren't riding it though!) The brake switch isn't a quality item with not much seperating the contacts so its worth investigating as Bryno says. Does this happen with the rear light off? If not then there may be a short between the rear light and brake light.

When I've seen this before, as ironduke says, it was the pedal sticking and not fully returning. Just took a lift with the toe of the boot to sort it out temporarily.

this happened to my PX last year, take the three brake pedal bolts out from underneath, pull down a bit & squirt a can of WD40 up there, load of sh*t gets in there, started working right after a couple of hours. didn't need the new brake light switch i bought
