Is it possible to get Vespa flywheels remagnetised? It's a late Rally 200 with Ducati Electronic flywheel.

Apparently the answer is yes. If you are experiencing problems with your stator output after replacing wiring and coils then look towards the flywheels magnetism. A rough and ready test of it would be to see how many nails it can pick up, it should be able to handle a good handful. I believe Beedspeed offer a remagnetising service or if not will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for your reply, I converted to 12v as the 6v lights were pathetic, now they are even worse And after riding 10 or so miles there isn't even a spark. So now I've got a non runner with no main lights The battery side lights and horn still work though). Never thought to check the flywheel, this was probably the cause of my poor lights in the first place Not even enough magnetism to hold a flywheel nut!

I'm suprised the lights got worse - did you send the stator off to be rewired or do it yourself? I'd disconnect everything but the ignition first and if the engine runs would measure the two output voltages. I'm afraid the battery operated equipment will continue to run - until it goes flat. I haven't had the flywheel off for a while but there are meant to be 6 magnets located in the flywheel rim I'll have to take a look one of these days so I can work out how to remagnetise them! The usual way is to apply a current in the correct polarity but of course it would have to be obvious which way round the polarity was. If anyone knows how the flywheel is constructed I'd be interested to find out.

Removed the 6v stator and substituted a 12v PX stator, again, swapped the 6v regulator for a modern 12v PX type, fitted 12v battery, re-routed one wire in the loom (the red I think) over to the battery side and everything worked as it should, for about ten miles! Hoping its just coincidece, only had the scoot for a month so haven't really had a chance to learn its foibles yet. Anyow, I've managed to scrounge up a used P200E flywheel, fitted it and it started first time Just have to see if something is wrong and it kills another flywheel, or if it was just coincidence. FYI Beedspeed don't offer a remagnetising service but suggested I try AF Raypeed Anyhow I know someone with a Lambretta flywheel remagnetiser so I'll see if that will work.
