I'm (my scooter that is) due my two year service in June which works out well as I'm starting my quest to improve (or destroy entirely) Anglo-European realations at the start of July.
Just rang to book it nice and early with Philip Youles, where I originally bought it from, and they quoted me 150 smackers. Seems a bit on the pricey side to me even though there is more work involved on the two than on the one year service. Is it?
The thing is I think I have to have the service done (and done at a Piaggio approved garage) to keep from voiding the warranty. I'd rather take it to Scooter Crazy, Mike Phoenix or Soley Scooters as I can imagine it would be cheaper and as they are all scooter specialists I'd have more faith in the job done. The bloke I spoke to at Philip Youles thought that this wasn't the case any more due to competition laws but he was far from sure. Anyone know about this?
I've only a year left on the warranty so I might be just as well knocking it on the head, especially as I'm after getting rid of the cat and having a kit and non standard exhaust on at some point anyway. Think I'll nip up to Scooter Crazy on Saturday and get a quote for the service.
Defo need a service before I go either way as although I do my best to maintain the scoot I'm bound to have missed stuff and there's other things I'm just not comfortable doing yet.

If it's an extended warranty that you paid extra for then it depends entirely on the T&Cs. If it's purely a standard manufacturer's warranty OTOH, then you're free to get it serviced where you like. There's more info here.

Ta, read the document. I didn't pay any extra for the warranty but it's called a 2+1 (that being 3 then) year warranty, I'm not quite sure why.
Just dug out the wee book and it does say that it has to be a Piaggio approved garage.
Gonna take it to the local scoot shop either way though, I've heard it's around the 50 quid mark and I've had plenty of recommendations on their work.

don't forget that they add labour and vat on top of their price.

I know they made it illegal for manufacturers to void warranties if you took cars to non main dealers as longs as they used original parts. I believe the servicing isn't a black art and you can look up what you are meant to do quite easily. Look at the scooter ads - I've yet to see one that says 'Full Piaggio service history', its rare enough to see one mentioning any service history! i suppose these new fangled automatics will change that.

even the main piaggio dealers don't always do a proper job of servicing scooters missing hard to do or hidden away jobs , iv got a nice smelly dirty jamjar of oil from my new piaggio 4-stroke,s gearbox , they never changed it at the 1000km service as stated in book , your ment to remove wheel and exhaust to drain oil , but there is a cheat making a slide out of a squash bottle which is what i have done , I have lost all faith in this dealer and will not be taking it back there for any work , I will also show them the oil and even make a complaint to piaggio uk

Devo did they stick a little piece of rubber ( old cut bike inner tube etc. ) against the blue device next to where the rear stand is sprung against as this can vibrate and cause wear........Ian

Don't think so, I'll take a closer look though.

My PX has just had its 5000km service, which all in cost me £144. The only major bit they replaced was a new rear tyre the rest being service cost, labour & VAT :S Still, it does feel like a new scoot now!

Hey Come on you lot get withit why pay some numpty in a scooter shop do it yourself its not rocket science, if it,s a 4 stroke all you need to do is the basics oil and filter on minor service and if its a 2 stroke just check everthing and clean the air filter and bobs your uncle. You dont have to change the plugs on either as modern spark plugs will last at least 10k if not more. Check tyre prseures and tyres for damage checl all lights and away you go. Think about it for a minute they are charging you to do something you should be doing weekly depending on the miles you do. Why pay someone to check your tyre presure? ? £144 for a PX 5000km service is daylight robbery and now ask why a tyre after just 5000km which is only 3000 miles. If you have any problems use this forum and ask questions its much more fun and a lot cheaper.

I agree partially, but if you're not overly confident that you've done stuff right you don't get the piece of mind you would by outsourcing it.
I don't plan on always having the scoot serviced by a shop, but until I'm more up to speed on the tech side (not so easy without a garage and good old Blighty weather) I will.

Servicing is the only problem I have with the GTS, they need them every 2000 miles, which can come around very quickly if you use it everyday. Oh and the fact that I am on my third back tyre and it only down just under 10,000 miles

Hey come on my friend if that was your car would you put 3 sets of tryes on it in 10,000 miles. Something not right somewhere.Devo you can do it, if you want to know what to do then use the forum, honestly they dont do anything a monkey can't be trained to do. If you check all the simple bits once a week like lights and tyres then when it comes to actually doing the service you can probably do it in about 1.5 hours. Granted with a belt driven twist and go you will need the tensioner and belt done but worst case senario is £70.00 by a dealer even better get a haines manual and the tool and save a fortune.
I have just priced the parts to service my P2 on Allstyles web page and at there prices its only £15.00 and i think i can get that down to a £10.00 locally. Kicks The C=*p out of £144.

Servicing is the only problem I have with the GTS, they need them every 2000 miles( it's not 2000 miles thats only an oil level check and brake check which you do yourself ( not a dealer service ) it's not even 4000 miles as in your service book from Piaggio technical department -you can apply the 6000 mile servicing to ALL 250/ 400/ 500 models built from 2003. This includes all X9 Evo models, All Nexus and X8's and obviously all the new stuff. There are no exceptions!

Sorry but I'd have to argue againgst a spark plug lasting 10,000 miles in a 2 stroke, even a modern one! The rest I thoroughly agree with, sevicing is easy and if you aren't sure about anything then ask on here and someone will have the nouse to talk you through it properly. Tyres tend to wear differently by the way you ride, so again there's no hard and fast rule as to their longevity, pootle about on astandard 125 and you may get 4000, ride like a lunatic on a tuned P210 and you'll be lucky to get 2500.

Servicing may not be hard but Id rather get it done officially by a Piaggio dealer so if I need to fall back on the warranty, I can.

Please everyone be aware under European law {which covers all warranties relating to any product manifactured outside the UK} You do not have to use a dealer of said Product for servicing or repairs to keep the product under warranty. Providing the service? or any repairs are carried out using the manifactures parts your warranty will not be affected. It is a total myth to think otherwise and don't let a dealer tell you any different.
