You will need to do CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) before riding a 125cc. This will be valid for 2 years, if you haven't completed a full theory and practical test by then, you will need to do CBT again and so on. You will also have to display L plates after doing CBT. You can ride a moped (less than 50cc) without doing CBT.
CBT involves a day of what it says on the tin, basic training. Some theory, a talk on protective gear and a bit of riding around cones, imaginary junctions etc. It's not really a test and you don't really pass or fail unless you are a maniac. Not sure about cost, but seem to remember it being less than £100.

So, you do not need to do a CBT if your scoot is 50cc?
My insurance co cancelled my insurance because I never gave them a copy of a CBT.

If you got a full car licence before 1st February 2001, you do not need to do CBT to ride a 50cc moped. Otherwise I'm afraid you will.
My post earlier was aimed specifically at nic83px who has had a full licence since '89.
