a lot of hidden meanings in the film that some may not see. love the way it is filmed like the 80s too. as he did with dead mans shoes. both excellent films.

The one piece of deeply hidden sub-text that doesn't get a mention unless you watch the DVD extras, is that Stephen Graham who plays Combo, is mixed race himself. So the fact that Milky, being second generation West Indian, still has that solid family structure and cultural richness, makes Combo even more jealous.
But I think Zepp's hit on a very important point there; that Combo's problem is not with Milky's colour, it's with his close-knit family, friends and girlfriend, all the things that Combo wants and can't have.

growing up in the Brum skinhead scene i saw Skins fighting each other and ones changing from one to the other(racist to non racist) as they got older and wiser, common sense prevailing. Look out for another Shane film, Once Upon A Time In The Midlands. yet again set in Nottingham but the accents are Ricky Tomlinson, Robert Carlyle, Kathy Burke, Rhys Ifans!!!!

I finally got round to watching this. Its a very moving 'raw' piece of filming. Well worth a watch!
Just a note it wasn't all filmed in Nottingham, the beach scene (where he throws some stones into the sea) was Grimsby.

Congratulations to the sexy and talented Vicki McLure (Lol) on winning the Best Actress award at the BAFTAs the other night for her performance in This Is England 2!

Good call Zep pity really she carried the rest of the cast in what was billed as a major television event that fell well short of the mark imo .

Now, I can't remember the name of the girl who played 'Smell', Shaun's tall girl friend, but after appearing in a quite sinister role in 'Shameless', she is now doing something else completely different in 'Life's Too Short'. She's not as good as Vicky McClure yet, but she's obviously multi-talented.

Apart from Vicki McLure, the high spot of the TV series for me was the punch up between our gang and the 'bikers' led by the shell-suited nutter. I never laughed so much for ages. ;D

Talk of the devil.........watch out for the start of a three episode "This is England '88" which starts at 10.00 pm tonight on Channel 4, and gets a good write-up in the Daily Telegraph TV section. Ironically, I'll be at my work Christmas 'do' and will miss it unless I can drag the wife away and get home before the hour difference in time here in Germany kicks in.

I missed the first episode, and watched the second instead of 'Boardwalk Empire', which also features Steven Graham. Bad choice! I won't be watching the third and final episode tonight. Vicki McLure is holding the whole thing together. The rest of the cast, including Joe Gilgun, are out of their depth with the peculiar storyline. When is someone going to offer Vicki McLure a real part? Her scene in which she visits Combo in jail was the high spot of the whole thing. I guess Steven Graham just took a break from Boardwalk Empire to get some decent British ale..........

Continuing the re-appearance of "This Is England" cast members in other things......... Did anyone else see Thomas Turgoose as a 'Tommy' in the trenches in the WW1 drama "Birdsong" last night?

At last!! Vicki McClure gets a proper acting job in the hard-hitting cop series 'Line of Duty'. She was brilliant! Stephen Graham was great playing yet another nutter in 'Accused' last week, and is shortly to been seen in what appears to be a complete break from type casting in a period drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch to be seen shortly, Can't wait!

Hi there folks, This isn't really anything to do with 'This is England' as we know it, but to say that after nearly nine years in Germany I have moved to a new job in York. So 'This Is England' is it?

Hehe, I read in my mother's Woman's Realm that GB is the worst place to emigrate to - stressed people, deep recession, bad weather, high bills, no jobs. Hehe - welcome home - woohoo! x

That may all be true Lucia, but the real question is, did you pick up any decent knitting patterns in the Woman's Realm?

Mornin' folks, Thanks for your kind welcomes. I gaze from my office window at a strange, bright, yellow object in the sky which reminds of times when it wasn't raining, but I suppose I'm being lulled into a false sense of security. The River Ouse is over its banks and Oskar, my dog, was totally baffled as to why his favourite tree was under water. I went past York Racecourse yesterday. You should see the size of the water jump. It's huuuge! Oh well, back to the grindstone.

and there was me thinking skinheads were a southern thing the only good thing about the film is the way it shows how thick and ignorant poor people were manipulated by the 'little Englander' middle classes who controlled the national front however I am literally sick to my stomach of seeing middle aged men dressed up in 'semi' skin clothes and thinking 'buddy not only are you not working class but I just know that your mum wouldn't have let you dress that way' I have pictures of my dad and uncle dressed all 'suede' in 1969, and me from the age of 8 upwards. fakes raping my heritage disgusts me almost daily. still as long as they're happy

on a side note does anyone know how skinheads were labelled racist my the daily mail because at its purist core it was really a left wing working class movement calling for the destruction of the middle class? or how the daily mail and the daily express used the album 'strength through oi' as an example of how skinheads were racist despite the album containing at least three anti racist songs? and how the rest of the british media accepted it wholesale without ever checking the facts? don't even get me started on that c..t bushell.......any skinhead that reads the sun is not a skinhead
nothing more scary to a bunch of cowardly elitists than organised working men. shame all they do these days is stand in pubs talking utter sh/te whilst the elite steal their money and their childrens future
