Vespa is... Still to this day taking the p*sh out of the Vespisti, with its quality of rustproofing.
Having wondered for about the last 40 years, what I see in them?, when Piaggio has hardly given two f**ks about the quality of their products (px/T5 classic sh*t paint jobs in the 1980's/1990's- to sh*t engine cases etc, in late/last production PX disc models! ), whilst at the same time here in the UK, selling them as a Premium product! And charging accordingly!
VESPA IS... A large part of my life, inspite of how Piaggio have treated it! 😉.

It is easy to be a critic of Piaggio and I often am, and yes what Mij says is correct, I think that when the basic vespa design was launched they had no concept of how long it would run for, I think that the model updates have been laughable when you look at what other 2 wheel manufacturers do, however part of the iconic status must be that the basic rediculous layout of an engine to one side and a basic shape/design was still sellable for so long with only a couple of minor tweaks. What are the fundamental differences between a late 50`s Vespa GS and an end of line PX? A disk brake, indicators, 12v electrics and small changes to some dimensions, other than that the similarities are astonishing, I view it as iconic, a bit like a Mini which was in production using the same basic shape for years, Piaggio probably view it as a way to kick the back side out of an outdated design for another 5 years until the next cosmetic make over, or until the emission laws put the final nail in the coffin, even Piaggio were surprised that the same basic scooter continued to sell in LML guise after they had walked away from it, funnily enough then they put the PX125 back into production when they realised people still thought they looked better than the alternatives. I bet they wish they could make a scooter today that will still be popular in 50 years time! We may see vespa as iconic/classic but Piaggio view vehicles as a way to make money, as that is what they are in business to do, and if putting on 0.5 litres of paint instead of 0.75 litres saves money then guess what? ? I still like them by the way. Ian

Had a new T5 classic "R" reg vowed never to buy new after that, decided Piaggio didn't deserve my money. 😉 Also, wasn't just thin paint, it was "No" paint on most of the bottom handlebar casting, toolboxes inside AND out, mudguards and underside of floor, underside of front mudguard, in side of side panels etc, etc! Even saw more than a few that had been touched up using paintbrushes, BADLY!!! Yip, doesn't make me feel any better though. 😉 And the winner is... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profit_motiveMij ☺
