Hi,
Me: started biking many years ago with my mother's Honda PC50 (we all start somewhere!), after a year a Honda 125, and after another year a Yamaha RD250 - which was a lovely bike until a milk float pulled out in front of me and my biking days and bike ended in the front of it with a busted leg.
30 years later and having restored 3 70 year old Atco lawnmowers and an equally ancient Howard Bantam rotovator, our daughter's husband gave me a box of bits he was given by his neighbour whose wife had demanded it was removed from her kitchen after 20 years of inactivity.
Turned out to be a Vespa PK125 XL2 (originally yellow with Correos logos indicating Spanish Post Office - but NOT a Spanish Vespa if the frame number is correct).
At least I think it is.
- Engine vin VMX6T (6 rotor; 12v ac; no battery; electronic ignition; 3 stud intake manifold; indicators and H/L headlight) so it could be.
- Chassis No 005969 which implies it may not be (there 'might' be an extremely obscured character after the last 9 but anyway they stopped at 57451 so a starting 59xx?rules out a 5 digit number).
- Large speedo with fuel gauge; locking side panels released by under seat catches; glovebox with integrated ignition switch; seat design fits rear moulding and an XL seat doesn't fit the latching catch on the frame(!) all imply it could be.
- SIP say the XL2 was only built in 1990 - but true or false?
- Beedspeed say the XL was between 1986 and 90, the XL2 1990 - but true or false?
- Vespa.name for checking VMX6T say between 1986 and 1993 but no mention of the XL2. Here the chassis number indicates at least the frame was built in 1986 but did they do this then stick Engine Type labels on much later?
So at the moment I have a hint it WAS built in 1990 but disputed by what you could argue is the font of reference Vespa.name itself.
Or could it somehow be a bitsa?!
Restoration is nearing completion largely thanks to SIP and RS paints - I at least now have my first scooter - running if not yet registered. But registration demands the year of manufacture - and here I have a problem. There is a dearth of information about the XL2, and what there is, is conflicting.
Does anyone know the definitive history of this variant? I haven't supplied a pic yet, but it does at least match the few images of XLs that are on the web (and are they that rare?).
Any information or links to about this model gratefully received.
Cheers, Andy
