...a door into the past, which room of music would you most like to walk into?
Here's a couple of suggestions:
I've met blokes that were in both those rooms. Jammy b*st**ds.
Any other suggestions?

One of the best televised soul performances ever, and they managed to show about ten seconds of it in that wonderful BBC4 Soul Britannia programme.

I just watched the Ready Steady Go clip again, gave me goosebumps.
Here's another fantastic live performance from Etta James. Can't think why she wasn't as popular as Aretha or Tina, maybe if she hadn't dressed like your Auntie Mavis on bingo night this would've been different:
And my all time favourite soul outfit, Gladys Knight & The Pips. Gladys was an amazing singer, and the Pips were the best backing group ever (masters in the art of tight, economical vocal harmonies, oh yes and watch them move) but check out the bass guitar too:

I hope some of our younger members that have posted on the contemporary rock music thread browse through this thread and watch the clips we're putting on here.
Now this is one room to have been in. Ladies and gentlemen pray silence for the great Jimmy Cliff.
Also, lots of people forget that before Stevie Wonder became a banal crooner, he was an unbelievable all-round soul singer/musician/entertainer. Check out this drum solo:

Is this the essence of cool or what?

No, I take it back. This is the essence of cool:
And who knew that Jeff from Liverpool SC has lived forever, and in a previous life went by the name of Donald 'Duck' Dunn, while playing the bass for Booker T & The MGs?

when i heard this song - Cantaloupe island - at the age of five, i wanted to play trumpet. I did so, but never at such a cool high standard.

I'm not into jazz, but they're not bad for a bunch of physics teachers.

Not into Jazz either, but that's quality ... is half Jazz and half R&B really.
The Booker T clip is a belter as well, oozes coolness.
