Here at vespa.org.uk there's a few young bands we like to stick up for, a couple of which can be found on our links page like Kaiser Chiefs and The Ordinary Boys.
I'm (a little bit) older than you, so maybe it's my decrepit ears but I think most modern bands, and by that I mean proper bands that play proper instruments, are only popular because compared to the unmitigated sh*te that kids have had to put up with for years, they're a breath of fresh air. When you listen to bands from the 60s and 70s, you find that it's all been done before, generally to a better standard. Razorlight, Franz Ferdinand, Libertines etc, I don't think there's anything new there. That's why my favourite modern band is Kasabian, because they are totally original in their style.
But you know what they say. Opinions are like a**es, everybody's got one.
;D

Kasabian and Paul Weller have both been confirmed for the V Festivals in Chelmsford and Staffordshire this August. Morrissey's headlining if you like that sort of thing.

Here's my two penneth's worth...
Arctic Monkeys...sound like a more polished version of The Wedding Present to me. Northern lads singing about 'real-life' stuff.

Kasabian don't do it for me, like a poor man's Roses without the tunes and genuinely impressive attitude and swagger ... in fact, a bit like the Roses themselves post 1st album. Like you say though Spence, opinions and a**es PS Ryan Adams, is sh*t hot. Can be an awkward self indulgent w*nker when playing live though.

Always seen Kasabian as more of a poor mans Primal Scream myself, but each to their own.

Do you like Oasis?
If you do you'll know what Noel Gallagher thinks of Kasabian. I liked the Stone Roses and Primal Scream are fine, but the Roses were not the saviours of rock and roll people made them out to be.
I'm not saying Kasabian are the best band in the world; I'm just saying that in comparison, other current indie bands are overrated, insipid, bland, samey same, NME compilation album fillers, and anyone who thinks Kasabian are a poor man's Primal Scream or Stone Roses, or thinks they're anything like OCS, either hasn't seen them live, or was very p*shed when they did.
Incidentally, while I'm on my soap box, I've gone right off The Ordinary Boys. I have seen the light, and the light's name is Dead 60s.

We may have to beg to differ on Kasabian but I'm with you on the Dead 60's, great band, saw them live a year and a bit ago. The album is great too. Like a cross between The Clash and The Specials (and if you are going to have influences you can't do much better in my book!!) Can't understand why the frankly not very good Hard-Fi made it big and they didn't. Ah well c'est la vie!!! I thought the Ordinary Boys first was a great album and its been pretty much downhill from there sadly.

If you want something totally daft and different...try Art Brut. I like 99% of the aforementioned bands, but then i have a wide varied taste. now where is my cd of mongolian diatonic singing??

I have a an album and a couple of EPs by Art Brut. Is good solid punk pop sort of stuff.
Dead 60s are good 'n all, though I haven't got to much by them, time for a visit to E-Bay I thinks. There is a lot of quality stuff on the Deltasonic label.
Have got plenty of time for Noel Gallagher (and a lot less for his kid brother) but he has got form for hailing bobbins bands as the best thing since diced Hovis. Proud Mary being a prime example.
Saw the Ordinary Boys a couple of years ago at Leeds ... really good live. Shame they have sold out big time now.
Diatonic, that's my new favourite word! ... it's just usurped usurped.

Looks like we all agree on the Ordinary Boys and Dead 60s then. And as for Hard-Fi, WHO keeps buying their records? Jesus they're boring.
Hey, don't knock Noel for tipping bands that didn't make it big... I used to have a recording of an interview with Roger Daltrey from about 1982, and his tips for the big time were The Alarm and Big Country. The Alarm and Big Country, The Alarm and Big Country....... (echo to fade)

Half Man Half Biscuit anyone? (not very mod, i know, but i love their lyrics). saw them in pompey about 87/88. so loud couldn't hear the vocals. couldn't hear for days after neither. Noel gallagher last year hailed the arcade fire, i believe.

Definitely with you on Half Man Half Biscuit, in my humble opinion Nigel Blackwell is one of this countries greatest ever lyricists. Shops in my local Sainsburys too, seems like a very nice chap. Arcade Fire not bad either!! If we are discussing slightly left field bnads I must mention Mogwai. Again hardly 'mod' but great music, amazing live.

Half Man Half Biscuit, turned down an appearance on Top Of The Pops because Tranmere were playing at home. Now there's keeping it real.

Nah, am not knocking him for hailing bands that don't make it big, just for hailing bands that aren't to good IMHO. There are a couple more bands (that I can't remember at the moment)I thought were pretty middle of the road and I remember him championing them big time. With Arcade Fire it doesn't take a rock superstar to figure out that they are going to be massive. Their first EP was laced with originality and brilliance and they have carried straight on from there . Bowie was appearing with them on stage years ago cos he rated them that highly. Saw them at the Apollo a few weeks ago, very powerful live. Half Man Half Biscuit, always thought the name was quality but never actually got round to hearing anything by them, might have to correct that shortly. Any recommendations as a starting point? Reading back a couple of my posts, they come across a tad arrogant. Ah well, if you can't be a snob about music when can ya! PS The Dead 60s album is only a couple of quid on E-Bay, bargain. Is overpriced for Vespas but is great for music.

Tranmere Rovers. another singing star fan of theirs is Ray Stubbs (o.k. singing star is a bit far fetched lol). Mogwai are good. their style came about coz non of them wanted to be the singer. even a bit more off beat...there's always Gogol Bordello. always nice to hear a track of theirs mix into a track from someone like Steve Rinaldi on my mp3 as it selects randomly. If you like good old rythmn and blues, have a little listen to Indigenous. they are fab live. really rock. was lucky to see them when i was in the states.

Ray Stubbs, very nice man. Went to my school, I used to play rugby with him. Not just a Tranmere fan but an ex-player also, he was a reserve team goalkeeper (in the early 80s I believe).
Steve Rinaldi, saw him at Camber a few years back. Up his own arse. Rinaldi Sings? No he doesn't, stick to the trombone mate.

Regarding Dead 60s: got into them by hearing dub versions of their tracks first.(i have a love of "versions") Would like to see them live, but doubt they come this far south. If you like dub/ska/reggae...there is a band called The Bees who are good live. bit lazy tho and their released stuff doesn't show them off very well.

yeah. most are session musicians and play with other bands or have solo projects going too. way better than that other band from the Vectis Isle....Level 42....grrrrrr!!!! how my teeth grind with distaste for that pap! but then, they were not my bag. so shouldn't knock them if someone else likes em. I think i'll go and chill out to some spacemen 3. (probably not many others bag...hehehe!)

Spacemen 3 one of the best chill out bands around I'd say. Another band that has caught my ear in the last few years is Interpol, they are real anglophiles from New York, influenced by Joy Division and other UK post punk bands. I'd rate them higher than The Kilers personally. First album Turn On The Bright Lights their best I think.

I saw Arcade Fire on The Culture Show yesterday evening (yes folks, that's the kind of Saturday night I have). I can see how they might be amazing at a gig, but they did this weird acoustic version of Guns of Brixton especially for the show and, well, doesn't anyone else just think that they sound a bit like an experimental school orchestra?

I agree woyith you about Interpol Nat. Also, i do enjoy listening to 22-20s and Jet. Sunshine Underground have a couple of good tunes. As for Arcade Fire: coming from Canada, one expects quirkiness. It's why i enjoy doing Canadian plays. Tho Bryan Adams disproves that theory i suppose lol.

Yes, heard about them being on the Culture Show, would have liked to have seen that. And here it is .... the internet eh, bloody marvelous.
Interpol are quality, also very good live. Actually met them once in Big Hands after a gig at Manc Uni, moody fellas ... goes with the whole image I guess!
