This morning on the way into work the scoot (VBB frame with LML 150 engine) nipped a bit, just for a moment. At what speed was that?

Maybe its worth exchanging carb with the Sportique.
That is if the Sportique carb can fit in a Sprint. Likely to fit I think, same engine displacement too.

I would pour a few drops of gas in the carb (lift off the air filter) and see if it runs again just to be sure. If you continue to pour a few drops, the engine should idle a few seconds at least.
Another idea is to take out the idle jet and use a put thin metal thread (from an old gas cable) through it just to be sure it isnt clogged.
My sprint used to be very stubborn in the beginning, after lots of head aches, I saw that the carb float had some shim in it - some one must of thought it would fix something.... Sort that out and it started right away. So, try inspecting the float to see if it looks ok, gas in the chamber is not enough.

hi,
to me it sounds like a weak battery.

after a few kicks whip the plug out, if it's dry, fuel problem (evaporation etc), if it's drenched, may be a leaking needle valve flooding it whilst standing, or a more of a spark related issue.. mmm...i haven't thought of checking the plug... good idea, ill try that next time vespa goes stubborn. Thanx!

thanx bryno, points look nice and clean even closed them on a very fine abrasive water paper to clean their surface but come to think of it, im not sure thats the problem, cause faulty points will always act up no? anyway, just every now and then it takes more than the usual number of kicks: but it does start on 3rd kick most of the time so maybe it's the 40 year old carb... or one too many fuel molecule at that particular moment who know...

how do you know when the point needs replacement? any classic your-point-needs-replacement signs?
same ques for the condenser.
cheers.

nice! here are some of the options, wood, metal, etc: carbon fiber may be my favorite choice- www.digitalveneer.com/page/808/maybe even a wood-carbon-metal combo

did you try to insert some sort of a long metal rod into the exhaust exit pipe and see if its clogged? if no, maybe you should
some garages use a drill with the same diameter as the end pipe, they insert it in and out and it should clear the exit from carbon and etc you can use a large screwdriver too, if anything is clogging the exit, screwdriver will remove it
that is, if exhaust is the problem and not carb... but worth a try

exhaust sounds the logic choice although it usually doesn't get clogged overnight but rather decline in performance as time goes by but maybe some "crap" just got loose and winded up at the exhaust exit... although sounds too early if you say its 18 months old..
regarding pickups, as far as I know, they either work or not and your engine is ok, just doesnt rev high so maybe it is the exhaust after all

what does it mean when the "pickup might have gone behind the stator" ?

welcome,
I don't think i ever ridden a two wheel which I didn't wish it had an extra gear on it.. even more so, a modified vespa... regarding ratio, I really have no idea
regarding the gears- yes, if you change one, you always have to change his companion gear as well

I don't have any recommendation on bigger jets, but I have a Pinasco kit on my PX200 with a Simonini fitted, runs perfect with a standard jet spark plug color is perfect
runs 120 kph according to speedo

i think that once you set up the cable and ride for a few km, and use the brake , youll see the pads will rapidly wear into place and arm movement will increase fast. then you'll maybe have to readjust lever again.
if the friction is unnoticeable, meaning if you turn the wheel, it doesn't stop immediately, its ok.

the best thing is to remove the plug cap start the engine while youre holding the plug wire a few mm from the plug top, that way you'll see the spark jump across
see what cuts out first, the spark or the engine
if engine, its probably fuel related if spark cuts out, investigate coil etc
