OK .. undone the sump nut and yes there is petrol in the oil Ordered the parts and touch wood should be sorted by next week. I was thinking of fitting a decent exhaust at the same time, I have phoned up several places for recommendations for 172 mallossi kit but getting different answers Some say a Simonini, or Pinasco and a couple have said the Scorpion... Help

Thanks for the replies and apologies it's an 172cc piston and barrel. Right hears the latest- Bought a new plug but never made any difference, checked the main jet in the carb and it was fitted with a 116, I always thought this kit would need a 120 main jet or greater so i phoned a couple of scooter shops and they said a 116 should be fine. I explained the problem with the scoot and they asked what the old spark plug looked like and i explained it was black/fouled and they said to undue the sump nut and smell the oil to see if i could smell petrol as it sounded to them like the main seal had gone because this would cause the problem with it not starting. After checking the oil i "think" i can smell petrol but i am still not 100% sure?? To split the engine and replace the seals is going to be expensive and even if i do this what is stopping it happening again?? Does anyone know what could cause this to happen and do you agree this could be the problem as all the scooters i have had in the past this is the first time i have had this issue Cheers cj

Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there can help me before I spend any more money on trying to get this scoot scooting again..... I have a 1998 Vespa T5 Classic with a malossi 210 piston and barrel fitted (everything else is standard). A couple of years ago it decided that it didn't want to start, I phoned turners scooter shop who collected the scoot and after examining it said that the rings were seized. They managed to remove the rings and said that they do not need replacing with new ones. They said I was using the correct oil so the only thought they had was it was because it had not been used over the winter. Everything was fine for a couple of months then it started to splutter and stall like it was being starved of petrol?? The compression seems fine so I don't think it's the rings this time, I have placed fresh petrol, stripped the carb, replaced the plug (spark is good), ht lead and cdi box but still no joy. Even tried the old trick warming the plug up and bump starting but to no avail.... So it spent the whole of last year in the garage because I spat my dummy and fell out with it. I have had loads of scoots since the early 80's and never had this problem. Do I go for a standard piston and barrel or buy a carb and exhaust to tune with the malossi barrel. Over to you guys and thanks in advance for any help. CJ. (Chester)
