It's the never ending question isn't it? Well, if you read the letters page in Scootering or listen to people at a rally for five minutes, you'd think it was.
Is there room for cars and kids at rallies?
I think it's pretty much accepted by any club member that a support van is a good idea in the event of a breakdown or an accident, but the main gripe appears to be with people who turn up at rallies in a car.
On one hand you can say it's not right - this is a scooter rally after all. But on the other hand, is there anyone out there who's ridden to a rally on a scooter who, if given the offer, wouldn't put their bags in someone's car so that you can ride there or home again in greater comfort? I know I've done it.
Then there's the side that says there are loads of people that have gone to rallies for years, who shouldn't be excluded just because they've decided to have a family. They can either come alone and get grief for the rest of the year, not come at all, or come in a car and bring the spouse and kids. The evening do would be a lot quieter if it wasn't for the people who came in cars, and guys - that means a lot less young ladies for you to ogle and you know it!
But that brings me on to the next point. Kids. Again, if people didn't bring their families to rallies, they'd be fairly sparsely populated. Okay, quality can be better than quantity, that's one answer. I personally have no problem with families coming to rallies, it's the next generation and all that, and a kid fast asleep in a pushchair in a corner of the do doesn't bother me at all, but what I do have a problem with is kids running around on the dance floor like it's a village hall wedding reception.
Daytime for families and kids, night time for grown-ups. That's my philosophy.
"But what do we do with our spawn while we're out partying?" I hear the mums and dads cry. You must have noticed that there's loads more kids at the evening do when the rally's on a holiday park rather than a camp site. My opinion is holiday parks should have babysitting/creche facilities provided so parents can go out for a drink without their kids a) getting under people's feet and b) seeing unsavoury behaviour or getting ciggy burns on the back of their neck in a crowd. I'm sure holiday parks used to provide babysitting services in the old days, can anyone confirm or deny that?
The only other alternative is to have a family friendly do and a kids free do in separate rooms. It wouldn't cost much more if anything at all, because there's usually a few DJs taking turns, and one of them could just go through and play the birdy song and Barney's greatest hits for a bit until it was time for kiddiewinkies to be in bed.
So, to conclude. I say it's a pity there aren't more scooters at rallies, but cars are a necessary evil, and kids I suppose have to come sometimes, but I just want them out of my way and in bed at a sensible time. Come on, if there's one thing that must surely get you going, it's this. Have your say!
