As I continue to try & get the scooter usable in traffic, the horrible grabby clutch is making the whole process miserable.
It has a tendency to stall from tickover (working on pilot jet adjustment etc) and if I give it a few revs the clutch grabs and attempts to throw me off the back. Even though the fine craftsmen in India who put the machine together no doubt spent hours putting the clutch together, I think I might need to take a look at it.
The current philosophy seems to be to buy a complete clutch assembly; I was brought up to replace the plates, but it doesn't seem to be much cheaper, plus I've no idea what I have.
Are all large frame clutches a universal fit? It's an LML 150 engine. Could I gear up slightly with a few more teeth on the primary, or would I also need to change the primary driven gear? The minor modifications I've done to the reed valve (removed bridge piece and fitted Boyesen 2-stage reeds) and the Scootopia box exhaust should have given it a decent top end, and it seems to run well at higher revs although I haven't ridden it much and don't have anything to compare it with.
Thx, A

Is it possible the friction plates are dry and need soaking in oil. Are you happy that the clutch has been built correctly. I think it would be useful for you to check that the brass thrust washer and bush are in good condition and the that plain plate which should have a slight curve in it does so.

This is a very common problem with LML clutches fitted from the factory. It's normally due to the brass bush being loose. However I have struggled with one where o just couldn't eliminate the grabbing issue so fitted a spare clutch I had. You could put a 22 tooth clutch in, which will help lower revs at the top end with little effect lower down. I have done this on my pre reed LML and o do prefer it's characteristics.

Thanks, I guess it was probably thrown together and I wouldn't be surprised if it has a bit of bolt instead of the brass pushrod.

I want to fit a Cosa clutch eventually but I won't be able to do that for a while. I'll pull it apart and have a look, and maybe fit new plates, or rub them down & soak them. On the plus side, I discovered I still have a clutch nut tool!

Hi Perkin, I was thinking more of the brass bush in the clutch body rather than the pushrod. If you've got an exploded diagram or workshop manual it will be on the outer body and it's what the inner cage of the clutch spins on and there should also be a thrust washer which will look like a flat thin washer made of brass. These want to be in good condition and able to keep the components central and free from being wobbly. If you're rebuilding your clutch all you can do is keep it clean and free from burrs and ensure parts which should slide smoothly do so. If your anything like me you might just take it apart and put it back together and it will be transformed into a thing of beauty. Scooters are mental.
hope this helps.

Well, I pulled the clutch out today & it's in a right old 2 and 8. Speedo says 22 miles, clutch says 30,000! Basket is notched but worse is the brass bush which seems to be crumbling away. It's that bad I'm not even putting it on ebay! So, I need to get hold of a clutch.

They are cheap enough from India etc if you want to take a punt. Personally if money's tight I would be looking at used but genuine vespa. Do you feel the basket is beyond repair, if the the grooves can be filed smooth the brass bush is very easy to replace.

I got a new one, Ferodo/Surflex 6-spring from Flintshire Scooter Centre. I was a bit concerned at first as it's 15mm smaller than what came out, but it's a revelation! All the vibration has gone and it's like riding a new machine. 👍😎
