Guys,
After 30years away, I’m back on a Scoot, and have bought myself a bog standard 1995 VESPA PX200E.
I rode it about 30 miles home, with no issues. No smoke, smooth ride, and surprisingly quick.
As soon as I got home, the wife wanted to go out, so we had a 20 mile ride to the seaside.
I filled the tank and put in some fresh 2T oil. About an hour later the Scoot started to struggle and was chugging a bit. The following day, it started, but ran like a dog. It was bogging, and needed big revs to pull away. It chugged like a git around town, but was fine flat out at 60mph.
I know that it sat in a garage for about a year before I bought it, so I decided to whip off the carb, for a good old clean. It’s the standard Dellorto SI, and with the help of YouTube, it was actually kinda easy to clean and rebuild. All the jets are standard, and now clean as a whistle. Filters and gaskets all good.
refitted it, and then the fun began. Couldn’t get it started. Bought new NGK B9ES plug and reset the right gap. Spark good, and plug getting fuel.
Finally realised that I must have turned out the air mixture screw. What a b*st**d to get to with the starter motor in the way! Well done VESPA. Anyway, made myself a right angled 7mm spanner and beavered away quarter turn by quarter turn.
Finally got it running! But then after 10 seconds it dies. Starts easy again, runs for ten seconds and dies. If you twist the throttle, it revs, then bogs, and 10 seconds later dies.
Can someone please give me a sensible solution?
I doubt whether it’s rings, pistons or seals. There’s no leaks, it’s clean fuel, good quality oil. It’s not the tank breather. The carb and jets are all original and squeaky clean.
And...it ran fine when I bought it a week ago.
Looking back.... I wish I’d just changed the plug, which was black and crusty when I took it out.
Its bound to be something simple, but I can’t figure it out.
oh, and can someone give me the definitive guide to the fuel tap? Which way is On, Off and Reserve please?
