Was wondering what you guys think, about welding an engine at the hole ( clutch side )that the primary drive fits in, a good or bad thing to do? Plz see example below 👇 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vespa-p200-casings/253267521465?hash=item3af7ebafb9:g:DicAAOSwAaJaEc8galso, anyone know of shops who do this repair? Reason for asking is, my mate has a T5 casing broken there and the local college refused to even try and fix it and a local engineering company tried to frighten him out getting it fixed, saying they wouldn't guarantee the repair. Local guys close to me have welded back broken engine mounts which I think is rather risky, it’s all doable and in theory as strong as the original, but it all depends who does it, the quality of the alloy etc
Personally I’d not go there, the issue will be getting exact alignment and fit of the drive If the hole is in anyway damaged, not sure it’s worth the cost/effort/risk.

its a common fracture point on 200 cases soon as there tuned past 16bhp (approx) ,the better way of fixing it is to weld before fracturing an convert clutch cover to a 4 stud/bolt configuration .an rather than dremmeling like this guy has tried ,get them machined properly .as there already reed valved i'd guess theve been abused an would steer clear ,cost to much to fix. for ya mates t5 cases ,strip em ,they will need aqua blasting before welding ,an either check around local ali welders .a lot wont touch em ,but a good one will , or ask local tuning shops who they use .H

bryno and henri, thanks for the replies 👍. The engine cases caught my eye on eBay and made me wonder why they were so cheap!, on viewing the photos, it became obvious why.I also wouldn't recommend anyone to buy them.
Agree about it normally being tuned 200 cases that break there, one I opened (a 210 Malossi) had broken in the same place after breaking a tooth off the primary drive gear and jamming the tooth between the primary drive and a gear on the layshaft! Also repaired another 210 that had a jammed kickstart, caused by a broken tooth jamming the same way! luckily the jammed kickstart was the first symptom of anything wrong and the case was fine.
Have also seen the four stud/bolt configuration before, think the guy with the T5 with a TS1 barrel fitted ( sorry can't remember his name) on the Scooteotica forum did it.
When my mate got the engine, he asked me to rebuild it for him as he thought it was leaking at the back hub seal!, after checking it over and the crack becoming obvious, On checking the primary drive nut, it was less than hand tight!, so can only assume this caused the crack, possibly with a few bad gear changes to help it along?
No local scooter tuning shops near by ( or the whole of Scotland) that I know of, that's why I thought I'd ask here, if anyone knew at a shop that had fixed this problem before.
All the best.

You must have decent welders and machine shops mij, even Scotland can't be full of non tax and VAT paying "foreign" food shops?? 😁

You could check with Moto-cross racing guys, I know a few local ones here that are always getting their engines repaired and welded.

Cheers for the replies, guys. Fife has a long and proud history in engineering and coal mining, so plenty engineering places around.I have a good engineering place a few hundred yards from me, that does plenty jobs good and cheap and across the road from that is an engineering works that built Hurricane aircraft wings in world war two, now does heavy pressure vessels, oil rigs were also built in the area . My mate was more looking for a scooter specific place that had experience of this type of repair, was hoping someone on here knew of such a place,in the hope that I could placate him 😉.
All the best.
