Check that the hub nut is tight. if that's ok, sounds as if it might be engine mounts might be tired. does it feel more out to one side than the other? I'm sure others will chime in to help.

There is always a little play, really pull on the back wheel and make sure its not the whole engine that is moving. On a high mileage scooter it could be the engine mounts, or just a loose swingarm nut. Usually these feelings are just tyre pressures. Depending on tyres/rims, rider weight and riding style, we all have our own settings. If you don't know what you are doing start with 18psi front and 30psi rear and work from there.

Could it be the bearing?

its rare for the output shaft bearing to fail on older external seal engines ,unless owners been lax about oil level in gearbox .the more modern internal seal type last well aswell,so long as decent bearings are used .if gone so bad to cause handling issues he'd probably more concerned by the rumbling/tortured metal sounds than handling quirks .H
