I've got gunk at the back of my engine. Its looks like its running down from above. Its all over the exhaust and it drips off the engine under the kick start. Its not petrol and it doesnt smelllike gear box oil. Its been like this for ages but it bugs me.
Any one got any ideas? I can post a pic later if it helps.
Cheers..Tim

If its all over exhaust header pipe, could be a blowing cylinder head, which could either be loose or warped. Is this a sip/scorpion pipe as the slipper joint could be loose and oil will be blowing back .
Remember petrol evaporates and black slimey oil residue just likes to stick around , a pic would be good

Sounds like it is engine oil, it could be coming from the breather pipe on top of the engine. A common problem with Vespas. I find mine does it on tickover and doesn't when the engine is running

By the way, when's the last time you topped up your gearbox?

I've also seen two stroke leaking from a butty box and running under the mats have the same result.

engine oil last topped up in september before brid and southport, so its done a good few miles. I cleaned it all off today so i'm gonna keep my eye on it. I was wondering if the autolube was leaking?

it aint yeah auto;lube if it was you would get it driiping from the top of engine or coming threw your back end floor board and you would know by the colour of the oil etc red or could be petrol leaking down from carb as it travells it picks up crap from outer engine which will produce gunk mine has done it ,ferdy shed of shame sc

I've got the same over my engine after fitting a Scootrs pipe, it seems to be blowing back out from where the pipe fits on the engine, I'll be sticking some exhaust paste around it when i get a chance, hopefully that will sort it.

It could be the oil seal behind the flywheel, or the gear selector box gasket, or even the O ring seal from the clutch actuator arm. All very cheap to fix. Or as mentioned before, the cylinder head base gasket or exhaust stub.
