I bought a new, Indian made combined CDI unit / HT coil, complete with 7mm copper cored cable for the spark plug. It looks to be a copy of a Ducati unit. Q: Is this cable captive, or can it be safely removed by twisting it off from the coil?

If it is a Ducati copy it will screw off and there will be a decent length screw thread to re-attach a new ht lead. If it's a copy of the 2011-on px cdi then it's a permanently bonded cable. It can be removed but it's a pain to do and there isn't a lot of screw thread to fit another lead.

Thanks, good news. It's for a Ducati single cylinder motorcycle.
