guy came to look at it and it turns out the cases don't match, he recons thats how its oily, only reason i was gonna sell it was to put money towards tubless wheels and also sell my wheels and tyres that only done a few hundred mile, thing is, the clown i bought it from ran a grinder over the serial numbers to take the oil off , i have registered it with dvla so it must be ok but still would make it hard to sell on, i was gonna keep it as a wee project but he seems to think they will never seal right because the cases dont match, is he right?

no, sounds like he dont actually know what he's on about or was trying to chip ya down in price as in "it wont seal so i'll give ya scrap value" . there all oily with gear-oil thrown out breather an spit back from carb .if i went to buy a lump an it was shiny i'd know it had been apart an inspected an probably decided to be junk so slung together an sold on to some poor beggar . using a grinder to remove oil ,not heard that before ,an suspect it wasnt the reason for disappearing numbers, if youve got it registered with dvla re-stamp numbers an be honest on sale an it should be ok .the "matching" of cases is to do with crank n gearbox shafts running true an not binding ,not gasket faces ,its not best practice but case halves can be mixed .on p200's theres a letter code aswell as numbers ,a's to a's n b's to b's ,sort of thing ,dont think lml do that tho .
