I'm a Vespa enthusiast from the 60s and 70s when I used to race and rally my 90SS (OHM66E). I was a member of Bromley Vespa Club, Portsmouth VC while at college, and Bellerophon (anybody remember that?) and remember good friends and times with both Vespa and Lambretta owners.
Now retired I'm renovating a P200E. Although it's basically sound, rust spots are blistering through the paint and I've decided to strip it all down, get it shot-blasted and resprayed. The alloy legshield trim should be replaced as it's corroded in places, but I see the special tool is around £70, too much for a single use. Does anyone know where I can borrow or hire one?

Hi henri, Thanks for the warning about the trim. I'm a pretty good mechanic - I've rebuilt more small frame engines than I can remember as well as one or two large frames, and I'll take care over the rebuild. I will contact the dealer I get most of my spares from (G D Brown in Godalming), and see if they will lend or hire the tool out, they might as I spend enough money with them. If not can I borrow or hire your trim tool? Colin

henri, thanks for the offer of help with the alloy trim, although it won’t be for a while as the scoot has to be shot-blasted and sprayed first. Although it occurs to me that fitting the alloy trim is one of the first steps in rebuilding, as it has to be done before the steering column goes in. I started off in 1966, not with a smallframe, but with a rather tatty 152L2 with no engine, which I bought from a dealer. This was because a mate had a spare Sportique engine and he helped me put the two together. I joined Bromley Vespa Club and got into the scootering scene of rallies and road runs. Two years later I saw a secondhand 90SS for sale for £70, scraped the money together and bought it. My mate (Trevor Sharp) bought one too and we had great fun tuning the engines, converting to 12V, and generally enjoying the handling, ground clearance and relatively high-revving engines they provided. I had the offer of another 90SS and we raced and rallied them until 1976 when I turned to other interests.
I bought my current P200E in 1982 my first largeframe since 1968. I used it, mostly for commuting, for eight years and then it ‘rested’ in the garage until last year (2015). After a few hiccups to get it going (minor rust in the bore, oiled-up fuel pathways in the carb and a leaking flywheel-side main bearing oilseal) I got it re-registered, taxed, MOTed and insured.
There is rust blistering through the paint in a number of places. It’s as if the bike has been through a heavy shower of gravel (which it hasn’t) so I have decided to get it shot-blasted and sprayed professionally. At the same time I’ll replace all the oilseals, any bearings that need it, clutch plates and bore – the piston rattles a bit on overrun.
