D, guru, we have progress! Did as suggested and used a hammer and very fine screwdriver to tap the metal ring out of the carb box. About three taps and it was out. Rain stopped play before I could finish, but box and carb are now back in the scoot, and slid in nice and easy (so to speak). Just about got the box lid on before it started p*ssing down, so I've not had a chance to start her and check the leak has been sorted. But feeling much more positive than I did Sunday and yesterday. Will report back when the feckin rain clears up!

I'm off at the end of the week, D, so if it comes to it, I can have a potter then. Thanks again for the tip, I was singing your praises at about half five tonight!!

Good work! Did you get the clip for the fuel pipe on too? Lets hope that that's it and no more petrol leaks.

Good work! Did you get the clip for the fuel pipe on too? Lets hope that that's it and no more petrol leaks. I did, guru, picked up some spring-type ones off eBay for buttons (was advised they were a better bet than jubilee clips). Still raining here, but hopefully I'll be able to have a proper check later. Fingers crossed!!

Ok, I'm happy to report that the oil leak issue is resolved. However, the engine is still revving way too high when she's started, and doesn't idle at all. I'm pretty confident that the carb box and carb are in as they should be, and everything is well torqued down (done by hand, don't have a torque wrench). Could it be that the throttle stop and mixture screws simply need adjusting? It's going to be tomorrow before I can get at it, but I need a starting point for diagnosis.
Cheers

I would probably start with the idle screw, adjust it in tight then open it by 3 turns, see how that goes.

If everything seems like its all tight and no leaks then it just needs adjusting. Here is the easiest way that there is, to get it close enough for a beginner.
1. Run the engine until fully hot 2. Wind out the mixture screw on the back of the carb 5 full turns (until nearly falling out) 3. Wind the idle screw on the top in until there is a steady tickover. 4. Check it splutters, revs badly and smokes from the exhaust. 5. Adjust the tickover as slow as possible 6. Turn in the mixture screw a quarter turn 7. Check it revs off tickover without dipping revs 8. Repeat 5, repeat 6, repeat 7, repeat 8, until it runs bad and dips when revving 9. Back out half a turn on the mixture screw and leave it there. Should be running fine now.

Also, should all this adjustment take place with the engine running, or is it adjust, turnover, repeat? Cheers

All while the engine is running. With the mixture screw all the way out, the idle screw will be mostly in to get a tickover

A combination of work, weather and family stuff has kept me off here for a while, but I'm happy to report that I have neither leak nor air getting in. Bit of idling tweaking to be done, but I'm pretty much all sorted. Thanks, once again, to all for their input and advice, it's much appreciated.
