Hi folks, I'm new to scottering I've purchased a '96 t5 classic it has just a standard engine. When pulling the clutch lever in to start off I've noticed it rattles quite loudly. The noise is from clutch/gear selector area, it engages all gears with no problems. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. thats a relief ,for a moment i thought rab (small r) was havin a mid-life crisis an goin all CAPITALS on us , Rab , high n welcome , is it a tinny rattle ,or a bag of spanners type thing , as the gear selecters low outside on the engine ,an clutch's high n in the wheel arch ,so your descriptions of were noise is dont compute in my brain , 1st things first , check security of flywheel cover an gear selecter cover , get somebod else to pull clutch as you get down an listen for where its coming from , if it seems to come from flywheel n cover but covers on tight could be a too close a fit an crank endfloats bringing them together when pressures on the other end from clutch . if noise is from up in wheel arch 1st check the tightness of clutch cover bolts , an general security of any components/bolts , if alls on tight you'll have to pull the clutch cover an inspect clutch for cracks n breaks ,an whilst there you'll be able to see rear of gear tree with the cush drive springs an cover plates ,if crackered these can rattle an give a harsh/jerky take off . We pulled the clutch cover off and the wire clip that holds the pressure plate in place was broken, changed the clip and it seems to have improved the sound.

if it's still a bit noisy I'd not loose sleep over it, some clutches just are, think it's the plates rattling in the basket, my P2 has been loud from near new but there's noting obviously wrong with it' my T5 was the same.
