Hi all,, follow up from a previous thread
VESPA PX 125 2003 Cosa clutch
I have just been given an early 6 spring 3 plate clutch to replace the Cosa 7 spring that got trashed last week. I also brought a second hand crank but not sure if it's a late or early one (think it's a early MK1) seller would not message me any details
However got talking to my local scooter shop Allstyles today to find out that a early 3 plate clutch will not fit due to the clutch cover being to shallow and not sit over the clutch ?? They said if the cover has 200 stamped inside it will not fit over the early clutch's
Also he mentioned that if the Crank is a later model it will not have a notch for the locking tag & nut!!!
So the question is
1. Will the cover I have fit the early clutch (stamped 200)
2. If the crank has no notch what washer/nuts do I need to install the clutch
Many thanks

weird ,who said that at alls , gary/ray take as gospel , billy or others pinch of salt , i always thought it was other way round ,cover needs grinding to fit over a cosa after a earlier 6 spring , an thats my experience , an if cranks not got notch use a frilly anti-vibration washer like for a cosa n loctite on cosa nut , belt n braces ,dont want ya pants fallin down in public bruce ,lest that is you want them too, an if it turns out covers too shallow give us a bell ive some early n later covers ,we'll get ya sorted ok , H

Cheers Henri,,
It was Ray that mentioned the cover wouldn't fit as the early clutch's have a taller gear which makes the clutch sit higher making the cover not fit!!!
So you can use a Cosa clutch nut on a early 3 plate clutch then??
If I have trouble with anything Henri I will give you a bell hoping I won't need another cover

Im sure the covers are pretty much interchangeable, the cosa is a little larger and on some covers the strengthening web needs grinding down and the same on the cases too. Fit it and see!

I know I had to grind down the cover to fit my Cosa ,,, I thought that's what he meant in the shop today but NO it's not the webbing that's supposed to be the problem its just the shallowness of the cover and the way the early clutch pokes out!!! Try and see

but early clutches dont have such a thick washer/spacer behind ,might it not be a non-auto lube set up clutch sits further in an cover will fit ,but a auto-lube 1 with gear/spacer behinds raised a tad too much , interested to see outcome as ray knows his stuff ,if he's saying theres issues there prob will be ,did he give answers , tho he has steered me wrong once ,but i think he was just trying to put me off doing something he felt was a "shouldnt be done" not as he told me couldnt be done . Maybe here is where the confusion lays.... On a 200 motor you don't need to do any mods if swapping from a cosa mkl to cosa mkll clutch.
On a 125/150, if you were fitting a cosa mkll clutch youd need to remove part of the oil throw on the cases and also the same on the cover (the webs on the cover are not actually strengthening webs but an oil channel)
I agree with H about the thinner/thicker drive cog/washer.
Or have i just confused things more!!??

Hi guys cheers for the info,,, I'm waiting on the parts to come through the post at the moment so until then I won't really find out what's gonna happen!!
Ray is normally on the money with he's advice especially with clutch's the (Clutch king) however I have taken advice of him before and it's been wrong!!!.....So until I try for myself I'm gonna take what he said with a pinch of salt!
Mk 1 engine will fit Cosa I-II & Older style clutch's with the Mk 1 clutch cover " Newer px engines will fit Cosa I-II only unless you change the newer P200 clutch cover to older one,, "that's what Ray said"
