Greetings from NE Essex I've just sold my BMW R1200GS...but still kinda want two wheels to get to the station..and maybe a a little weekend cruise. I've been looking at Scooters, and of course, the Vespa is the iconic scooter - I was looking at some FAR more practical "sensible" modern scoots. But nothing else is making me grin the same. So. New or 2nd hand? Who does the best deals on new? If i look at second hand - what are the pitfalls? Any known things that i should be especially aware of? Also. The racks look as flimsy as cheese - I think it said MAX 4kg weight stamped on it. (What is this...Ryan Air??) I typically need to take a laptop and a stack of paper architectural drawings, and quite often PPE (steel boots, high viz hard hat etc) with me. My concern is lack of storage space. What do other do? Lend me your wealth of wisdom and experience. Thanks. ET

hi n welcome , run bikes aswell myself so no "over from the darkside" comments from me , sounds like a px type would suit down to the ground ,they can be re-styled to look more older/classic ,but are 12 volt n lectronic ignition reliable scoots .easy availability of spares an tunable if you miss the speed of a bigger bike,an disc front brake as going back to a drum can be scary if ya use to discs .an if not a badge snob the lml px clones are half the money n just as good,if not better in some respects .this might be heresy here but, have you looked at the new scomadi lambretta types ,if they ever get the 300cc on sale i'll be tempted . an ive a mate who does his weeks shopping for him wife n 2 sprogs on a px with front n rear racks +a rucksack ,an ive had a spare engine on a rack before n there 25kg .didnt do much for the handling but rack coped fine enuff .H

hi and welcome go for a px or lml if buying second hand all your really looking for is rot on older scoots floor pan inside rear arch anything else you can see hear or feel is wrong.nothing will make you smile like a traditional vespa all these new fangeld plastic things should not be allowed a vespa badge. you can fit your laptop in the glove box and fit a stainless back rack for your stack of paper work

I think it's going to happen...I was getting a bit bored of 0-60in 2.8secs immaculate handling, blah blah. No soul. BMW.
I had a test ride on a 300 GTS. It was like getting off bicycle onto a microscooter. Big grin.
I will get a new or newish one... Whilst I have a garage full of tools and the skills to do most things..what I don't have us time...or maybe inclination..happens when you turn into an old man.

bored @? of nought to 60 n back to nought in time it takes a porsche 911 to get to 60 , how much of a old man are you , i'm crackin on 50 n never get tired of that sort of fun , scoots will make ya smile just as much but in a different way ,horses for courses ,in town scoot every time ,any distance or pillions involved out comes the bike , an for serious fun/harley baiting in traffic a tuned smallframe is unbeatable ,italian shopping bikes ,ya got to love em as they break ya heart n ya wallet , coz there worth it , H

Well. okay. granted. Bored may a bit of an overstatement. But I have v little time...I have a dog too. SO really the bike was getting very little use, and a scoot could just provide a two wheel grin whilst heading to the station.
Anyway I'm off stick fishing...

If you are considering a modern Auto scooter then i'm not sure your statement 'Vespa is the iconic scooter' applies, not sure an auto will ever be considered iconic ;-)
If you are thinking old school, geared, 2 stroke classic, that's a different!
I use a 1985 PX200E for the station run every day, rain or shine, its not far, but always puts a smile on my face riding home at the end of the day. Work bag, laptop etc is no problem to carry.
I also ride a KTM 950 Adventure and get just as much fun out of the scooters.
Do it, enjoy!

LOL, yes but I don't have 30 years left in me to wait for an auto to become a classic.. Have fun!
