Just order a standard size plate, they're cut to the legal size by law (assuming you're not going down the illegal **ahem** 'show plate' route!).
As long as the throttle shuts on its own, there's no need for an extra spring.

I've now fitted the throttle spring on the handlebar and the throttle snaps shut a lot better. I had to drill a fine hole in the throttle tube on the handlebar so the spring would fit.

It's standard on later ones, but I think by that time they were just using the same parts world wide. No plate behind needed, feel free to fit one though

I think the minimum legal size is 9 inch by 6 and half inch. for about £7 including delivery. I think youre allowed front and rear plates on a bike registered before 2001 but you can display rear only if you wish.

I think that's a showplate size doulsy and I'm not entirely sure it's road legal....all those i've looked at have been 9x6.5 or 9x7.

Those plates on the link will look great, they might need to see a copy of v5 to make a plate for you.

plate size isnt part of mot , my motter always laughs at mine til i point out his smaller one , an the plate too ,fnar , it is a road traffic offence an a bad humoured copper can give you £80 on the spot , i run my smallframes with 6.5 x 6.5 plates as they fit the back nicely ,in proper font the cameras can still read them so 99% of coppers are fine with it , but there all pre-83 , my daily n long distance hack have full size ones as they do the most mileage an i dont want any hassle. i think legal is 9.5 x 7.5 , if theres a makers name across bottom there usually legal 1's ,no name =show plate , an a embossed/pressed ali plate will look as genuine/stock as a plastic number 1 ,both where fitted ,it depended on what the dealer who registered it first would use , H

Here is 'from the horses mouth' for sizes - read pages 9 & 10: www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/359317/INF104_160914.pdfIt isn't the size of plate that is specified, it is the size, height, width, thickness and spacing of lettering and size of border - the 9.5 X 7.5 is always safe, but it can be smaller, depending on the letters and numbers, if you could be bothered to lay it out precisely and argue the toss with Stroppy-Cop. When I bought mine it had a very nice narrow black and silver plate, which I had to change because that was only OK for pre Jan 1973, (although I've kept it); I looked at sizes then, and for mine it really wasn't worth playing with the few mm, so kept it standard, big old black and yellow.

There's someone selling bike plates as 9inch x 6.5inch as 100% road legal. So if that's true I'd say that would be about the smallest road legal plate for my bike. I'd like to fit something smaller as Henri says but it's better to pay say £40 for a nice LEGAL plate than a smaller one and get fined £80 by a nitpicking policeman.
