Before I finally get round to re assembling the front forks etc I'm wondering about using stonechip paint inside the front mudguard. I'd be grateful for some advice..... Is it best to over paint stonechip with the scooter colour? Is it generally acceptable to leave it without over painting? (I guess that's my first question re-phrased). inside a mud guard i wouldn't bother be careful applying stone guard over rattle can primers and one part paints it can "mud crack" the solvents in stone guard are quite strong and can attack the coating they are applied over

It has been painted with cellulose primer, using a spray gun. I've dry flatted with 360 grit.
I feel as though I should protect it with something and wondered what most restorers do.

mask up where you need to and give a small area a good squirt as per distructions on the can and wait an couple of hours if nothing happens you should be good to go

as shipscat says you can spray the stone over celly primer an it should be okay, the mudcracking is when overpainting in celly body colour that will react with different thinner in the rattle can primer , you mentioned in message upol chip, i think they do a celly based 1 for restorers ,if not a can of "barrier coat" is needed before overpainting , its not cheap , 20-30 quid for a 400ml rattle can , or you can try a layer of etch then topcoat put on in several really light mist coats ,so theres not enuff thinners at a time to react , it can work but isnt 100% reliable , but inside a mudgaurd it wont be seen if mudcracked ,an the cracks dont go to bare metal there just in the chip paint layer so steel is still covered/rust-proofed , H

OK thanks H. I think I will give the Brighton supplier a ring to see what they suggest. I don't fancy having reaction/cracking problems. It'll drive me mad.

If it's a daily ride stonechip is a sensible choice, if it's a 'standard spec' restoration you'd be leaving the underside as painted finish, with no lacquer top coat.
I do this and just wipe over with waxiol to give it a bit of rain protection.

OK thanks Bryno. I'm trying to keep it as standard as possible, but I think I'll put stonechip inside the "bubbles," front mudguard and the underside (the latter over painted with body colour).
I looked at reviews for Hammerite Stonechip and none said bad things about it so I have ordered some (in white). Amazon had the best deal...three 600ml aerosols for just over £17 inc delivery....can't be bad.
