I'll explain. Have a mate who has a fast Lammie (186cc) but it completely out of love with the reliability. Now I have to say a 1967 Lammie needs love, care and a sense of humour too. He ain't laughin'. He is also not mechanically minded. Maintenance is more Basil Fawlty style (thrash it with a big branch at the side of the road)! So, he wants a Vespa. Ideally a 125 (ahem, you know; the 125 that is a bit different inside but loks fine from outside officer) but not to make it unreliable. I would think (as I have done this for another mate) a 4/5 year old PX with a 166 type kit fitted. We all know that the last 10% of power increase is 90% grief so I want a reliable scoot so he can fall in love with scooting again instead of breaking down. Have to say he's not mechanical so the Lammie problems to a degree are of his own making but...................................................!!!
So the question is, what would you lads & lasses think to buy? Budget around 2 grand. Anything in the South that is fulfilling that bill for sale? Thanks in advance!!!
PS Just repaired his Lammie exhaust that fell off on the last ride out!!!

heresy i know in lammie circles ,but they can be reliable ,set up as standard (read slow) an they can be very reliable like a honda ,but also very boring like a honda . more cool riding than you pushing jokes aside your plan for a mild kitted px seems best ,an as youve done 1 for a mate already should be able to coax him through the experimental/setting up/running in phase. tho he does sound like the kind who could break anything if he put his mind to it . have you thought of other chassis with a px engine in like a vbb if he likes the style ,i might just have 1 ,b reg ,nut n bolt resto, new bits all over,a px engine with choice of 125 or 150 standard barrels,in bare metal at moment so he could choose his colour/s .an if he wants it mod a selection of embellishers ,this is a english scoot not a indian import . or if he's shorter in stature an would fit a smallframe ,same as above for condition,83 v100 with standard engine but prob kitted/tuned to 10-11 bhp when finished ,equal to a px an lighter=faster ,an with mental tuning capabilitys/potential (up to 33bhp+). english scoot with 3 owners an mots reciepts to prove it.both scoots 12volt an electronic ign . more than 2 bags of sand for the vbb an less for the smallie . really tho a decent px125 can be had for not much more than half of 2 ,leaving plenty to kit an tune it ,wouldnt buy 1 already kitted unless the mechanic/rider is well known to ya ,or ya wont know the quality of work or running in discipline .whats ya mate doing with his bretta ,its been a year or so an the painful memorys have faded ,i might consider owning another money pit ,it will be tricky getting it past the management (wife) but nothin a bottle of good red shouldnt sort . LML 125, Polini 180 kit, get it ported and stick a P2 carb and a semi decent exhaust on, and he should still have change left.

or the lml 5 port reed valve motor as standard can be made quite good ,with money saved he can buy the badges to hide its "indianess" ,remember he's a bretta man an there quite funny about indian scoots, tho where they think all the "gp" cases n cranks an electronic ignitions come from has always puzzled me,an ive never got a answer when ive asked. I know i am returning to Scooters after a 15 year gap, but i feel like im knew as i had completely forgotten how to ride my new px properly. And whilst im still running it in, 500km done so far, the change in the performance from when i picked it up last month to now is well noticeable, not because i've altered it (that mild modification is coming after the 1st service if they still agree to it, ) but the main reason is i've learnt how to read her now, listen to the engine, know when she needs extra revs, know when to drop down a gear etc, i'm learning daily. One thing i will say, i was told i would go a lot slower than i used to ride it because im now 40 rather than 25, and i will say, that's 100% correct, i have really lost my bottle when it comes to cornering. Having said that, The Sava Kran tyres it was fitted with (cheapskates) that are on dont help either when it's wet.
As far my opinion on the new px, i love it. Even more so when i rip the cat exhaust off.

def need some decent rubber ,the cheapys are made hard to resist wear an last longer=less grip. there the main thing between your bum an the tarmac ,like helmets "if youve got a 50p head buy a 50p lid for it" ,same with tyres , if you want to potter about get some michelins s83/s1 , if ya want to speed up a bit go conti/twist or for all weathers conti/move or similar .tho the last 1's have a rep for wearing faster .it will transform the feel/handling of the scoot an your confidence in its handling will increase like ya speed . Cheers, i have read numerous threads about tyres and its one thing nobody agrees on, but the above gives me more to work with. Im not that fussed about speeding everywhere, but to be able to not feel i have to slow right down so i dont come off will be nice.

kru251 , a wild 1 i know but ,on fleabay listed as a piaggio (douglas) 125 , for about 250 quid an 2 days , 7000km = bout 4.5-5000 miles ,12 months mot , from the front a px125 indicater model ,from rear a cosa 2 , weird ,its a lml supremo ,out the box sort off, but with the 1600-1700 change from 2000 ,think of the tune that could get you if a racer-boy ,or a mountain of chrome that would make your px in full dress look restrained if mods ya mates thing. an all on a scoot most would guess is a px/cosa cut n shut , its rare/weird/cheap/tunable/kittable/an nobody would get upset if ya did something outrageous/radical to it. dont know about ya mate but its ticking some major boxes with me . got a whole cosa in the family dont need a 1/2 1 aswell,Henri

i was first, an holiday? every weekend 5 miles down the road ,so lets remember were british an form a orderly queue BEHIND ME, if ya mates set on a px kru, there seems to be a different 1 on the board in allstyles every time i drop in ,prices from 1000 to 1650 mostly . or gumtree/friday ad /pre-loved . gumtree is best for cheap/bargains/deals . if he's that hacked off with his lammie why not advertise for a px in px plus cash ,scooter trader or scootering ,bet he gets a bite or two. henri

Hi Henri, Not ramps but steplifts etc plus hoists and Hi Lo baths and the like.
On the scooter front I got him a black colour,'57' plated PX125 with less than a thousand miles on it from new! Faults? Some rust as usual on the footboards and poor lighting. New VR ( voltage regulator) sorted that one OK. Guy loves it. Said it was such a novelty to be able to go for a ride AND come back and ride it up his driveway (not be pushing it off a beaver tail flatbed or taking it out the back of his van)!!!!!! Clean unmolested bit o' kit!!!!!!

Hi Henri, Actually no. I want him to have an easy to use, autolube, RELIABLE scooter that just does what it should do and keeps him coming back from a ride-out under his own steam so to speak. That way he can regain his confidence in the scooting 'world'. That Lammie really tested his patience!!!! Now, as I now own his non working 1967 Li 127 Special with a Malossi 186cc kit fitted (and a holed piston I think) I will probably fit a spare 150 std engine after I have cleaned it up (as I have one sat under the workbench at present). That after I have finished another Vespa owners request who was selling his PX 125 with a modified cylinder kit fitted but after I worked on it with new exhaust, jets and an overhauled front brake etc now wants to keep it. He wants LED rear bullet lights and spot lights up front like mine! Plus another Portsmouth owner of Lambretta Li wants a cylinder upgrade doing by me and I'd like to finish off my LI disc brake conversion from cable to hydraulic operation..............................and hold down a busy/stressed full time plus sales job!!!!!!!

You have LED spotlights? Do they actually illuminate, or just shine? Thinking of mounting one on the legshields (I've been given a Bates that a mate was getting rid of) and thinking of using LEDs if they're any good. I want to be able to get to a rally and turn it on (DC) if I get there in the dark.

I have five spotights on my PX. Two are set up with LEDS. They give a blueish light that is more widespread than a 'proper' spotlight although there is some road illumination. BUT, brilliant for being able to be seen by other road users. I have done another Lammie the same and his led spotlights are far more visible than his halogen headlight in my mirrors with the added bonus of very low current draw of course. If it is pure road illumination you want then std halogen lamps are the way to go I guess Nik.

Just an update. The guy absolutely loves his Vespa as he reckons it is still an incredible novelty to go out on a sixty plus mile ride as we do most Wednesdays and not have a major repair to have done on it (his last five runs out on the Lammie all had issues; the last rather terminal).
A bit of jet playing, airfilter drilling out has seen it become a really good PX125!!! Now another member who has just finished a Servetta rebuild (Spanish Lambretta) but is having 'issues' might go the Vespa route he says. Oh my; what have I started? The other Lammie owner (other than me) feels now he might become a minority case!!!!!!!

stop dreaming gaz ,if ya lucky he might leave it to ya in his will, wether thats good or bad luck i cant say on here. an old lamms dont hide in sheds they get outrageous amounts of cash spent on them an then become permanent fixtures in the lounge/dining room/bedroom .a shame as they make god awful coffea tables. i have to admit tho its been almost 2 years an the painful memorys have faded ,i almost fancy another lambretta , just for going to the shops on ,honest . an what do ya mean "odd 150's" ,most "125's" are only 125 on the v5 ,an ya forgeting the 200's ,plenty ov them about .H
