Hello all . I've just ordered and had fitted a complete set of top and bottom steering bearings on my 81 p200 , they were fitted by a qualified and very experienced motorbike mechanic so I'm pretty confident they are set correctly. The problem is when the steering shaft was put back in its coming up to short to get the pinch bolt back by 3-4 mm. The bearings and races have been mic'd up to the old worn ones and the measurements are negligible in difference but I can't for the life of me get the cut out lined up for the pinch bolt . Am I missing a trick here or arse they pain to refit ? Any help appreciated thanks

was it bearings and seats?
if so, sounds to me like the bottom seat was just not pressed down on the fork tube properly.
Drop the fork out and see if there is any gap between the seat on the fork, the dust shield and the lower bearing seat.
and if the upper seat of the lower race was also changed (the one in the frame tube) check that that is fully seated.

I had the same problem, took the forks out again and could feel the seat was slightly raised one side, not much but enough to stop the pinch bolt sliding in. Large socket and a mallet, some firm taps on the protruding side of the seat and eventually got the pinch bolt in. Took a few attempts but once correct the bolt went in no problem.
It's actually a good indicator that something is not right!, you wouldn't want the bearing seat to suddenly correcting itself at 77mph on the M1.

When using a socket as drift, make sure your tapping the edge of the bearing seat and not the surface where the actual race sits.
