Update!
Father in law (proper mechanic) came round and looked at my scoot. Cleaned carb out again (I hadn't done it properly!) emptied tank (likewise) cleaned spark plug (as before) put fuel in kicked it over and 3rd kick it started!
What can I say? I'm an idiot or he has a Midas touch?

Not checked woodruff key. But as it wouldn't start and now does would the woodruff key be the problem? ie Has it the power to let me run the engine when it wants to?
Need to get flywheel extractor anyway so cannot look at woodruff key! Was going to buy off an ebay shop for about £6. Is this a decent price? I have no scooter stockists nearby and do not really "hang out" with a club (prefer the mystical lone wolf persona!) to borrow one. Who do you use for tools on tinterweb?

That's a good price for one, but if it's firing up cleanly, and picking up nicely, then leave it alone.
As for tools, the one rule I've always carried through my scootering life is 'If you don't know how to use the tool, don't buy it'. You can do more harm than good with some. If you're buying the puller though, make sure you get the flywheel holder too.

Remember me?
Well, someone said give it a week and say that, well it has been a couple of months and my dear machine is farting and spluttering again. Since last episode it has taken me to work and back (50 mile round trip) on numerous occasions and no problems. This morning it even went to have MOT and got there and half way back again, no problems. Then fart time!
Nursed home, checked fuel flow, spark plug and carb. No problems. Leave for ten minutes and it idles fine. Get on road and fart etc. this time though I noticed smoke/fumes coming from underneath??
Got home, ran it on idle and covered exhaust but it kept on running. Shouldn't it stall??
Couldn't see smoke/fumes coming from elsewhere though??
Help me obi wan..........
Rob (eating humble pie!)

It should stall the engine, it's a sign of a blown seal (But covering the exhaust has been known to blow seals, so don't make a habit of it!).
I'd still guess at electrical. It's too late to reread, but did you try changing CDI and stator?

It's too late to reread, but did you try changing CDI and stator? Or it's a sign that the exhaust is blowing around the exhaust stub in a position you can't see (maybe towards the middle of the scoot), but not for sure. These stoppages need to be sorted in a methodical way. I once had a Suzuki GT250 two stroke twin that had a similar problem. Traced to a duff plug. Changed both (I always kept spares) and the problem re-occurred about a month later. Can't be the plugs says I as I changed them. It was though!!! Although fitted a month or so apart they were from a same batch of NGK's that were faulty and their ceramic to metal seal leaked. 845t4rd to find as they worked when rested on the cylinder block but when they were installed and got hot? So, the lesson I learned was never ignore the methodical method just 'cos you fitted something new.

Changed CDI and put brand new plug in (must remember to buy spare!)
Started fine. Having coffee now then we will see!
Stay tuned!
