Off to the left as you sit on it, no reserve if you have a fuel gauge, otherwise on is straight up, reserve is over to the left hand side.

.....Only on pre-fuel gauge models. No reserve on those (which is why I'm changing my tap!)

True enough Nik. Fuel gauge model = tap pointed fully left for off & pointed fully right for on (as sat on the machine).

With a fuel gauge model, how much is supposed to be left when the light comes on? 2 litres? (a quarter tank?)

Two litres (1/4 tank) is the figure I believe the warning light comes on at too!

Something like that. I usually reckon that I've about half an hour at most (if I come off the throttle) before I'm pushing it... Experience says 'treat the fuel gauge as you would the speedo - i.e., it's lying to you'. Hence the Mk1 fuel tap going in

Kru, yes, there has been a lot of discussion about that. There is also a lot of discussion about the amount of crap that gets sucked through when you run low.
I'll repeat what I said about 2-stroke oil and mixtures -People forget that scooters aren't highly strung machines, even when you tune the rocks off them. A second of running lean as you switch over will do no more damage than running with the airmix screw a fraction out of perfect. A TS1 in the 80s was a more highly strung beast than any Vespa, yet people did tens of thousands of miles without it being an issue.
Keyboard experts who think they know everything but ride nowhere.

Well I have a light system on my Jimmy (as I thought it looked a good idea), but std taps on the new 200cc Mugello reed valve Lammie and std Li125 plus the std fuel gauge issue Vespa on/off tap. I figure just don't run too low; FULL STOP! ;D

When we did Holiday in Holland - The Long Way, (Lancashire - Norwich - Harwich - up to the site, then the same in reverse) I ran completely dry three times and did no damage to the piston.
On the other hand, during Lands End to John o'Groats I didn't run out once, but picked up some crap fuel that kept blocking my jets and I holed the piston.
