Well it finally happened, after 18000 miles the speedo packed up, with MOT due in two days. From what I can gather, it's not actually an MOT fail as it isn't officially checked due to the fact that they don't ride the bike. Well guess what, they do where I take mine. They ride it from front of shop round the back to the test bay.
Now due to the fact that it's illegal to not have a working speedo (if fitted) do you reckon they'll be duty bound to fail it? Will they issue a notice, or ignore it completely? Anybody have any experience?
Due to other commitments it's going to be a ballache to change the cable and/or the drive before then.

The law on this one is funny.
It's illegal to use a vehicle without a speedo - Construction and Use regulations - but it's not an MOT testable item. Also, to the best of my knowledge, there is no requirement for a working odometer, only for speed measurement.
I've never been failed on one, even having taken in previous years MOTs to the tester.

Well If they do ride it that bit then they may notice the non-working speedometer. Depends how 'fussy' they are. The mileage will show as higher by a good few miles (from the last ticket) so if they fail to see the needle not rising (and they may not if it's only a short distance at almost zero speed) then you might get lucky..............................? Technically it is a failure point. Hope it passes OK !

It's not a failure point - it's only a C&U offence. MOT's only test for safety features. A speedo isn't one, neither are mudguards - though those must be safe if fitted. Details: www.motuk.com/Motorcycle%20MOT.aspIf you should get failed on it, appeal immediately and ask to see their copy of the MOT testers manual.

LOL. ;D
"If you should get failed on it, appeal immediately and ask to see their copy of the MOT testers manual."
Or just change the speedo/cable and stay legal....................oh what's the fun in that eh?

He didn't have time and it's not an MOT fail.
See his first post and my subsequent ones on the subject.

I did! Awaiting to see if he passed. Bet he did eh? Takes a pretty observant MOT man to see needle not moved on a short move from park area to test bay.

We're not discussing whether he needs it for the road, only to get through the MOT.
Those links back up what I keep repeating - it's a construction and use issue, not an MOT one. The question was specifically asking about MOTs, not about the use of MOTs on the road. You can harp on about the road use all you want - I'm not disagreeing with you, in fact I made the same point in my first reply, that while it is an MOT pass, it is not legal on the road (Construction and Use legislation, as quoted by you in your links).
I assume the scooter went (quite correctly) through it's MOT without one?

To answer the question, I'm no further on. Remember those commitments I mentioned? Well it now means I won't be getting it done til next week. The scoot is locked up in the garage until then. I'm not going to do the speedo before then so I'll let you know.
Sorry to disappoint, I can tell you're all excited and desperate to find out. ;D

Oh Robjack! The suspense.................... Probably far more than East Emmerdale Road or whatever soaps are on now lol. ;D It's got to pass (unless it turns up with only one wheel or something). I have a spare PX speedo sitting here too ha ha

Passed. No mention of speedo.
I've since replaced the cable and worm drive, simple enough, but that small bolt that holds the little retainer plate at the wheel end is a bugger to replace isn't it? It nearly got launched up the road on a number of occasions. Mind you, it didn't help having a 5 year old trying to strangle me with a bungee cord at the time, the little angel.

;D Bl%dy crap retaining system isn't it? Now, did you go for the speedo cable inside the leg............or outside of it? I've seen those speedo cables fitted both ways.

Sorry Kru, you'll have to explain that inside/outside leg to me. Do you mean outside the fork leg? I can't imagine that's even possible?

Sorry Kru, you'll have to explain that inside/outside leg to me. Do you mean outside the fork leg? I can't imagine that's even possible? Well mine sits like this:-But have seen a good few with the cable mounted outside the leg and mine was bought 'pre-owned' with the cable outside too.

don't see how outside can possibly work, the angle is all wrong going into the drive and the cable would be pulled too tight, should always be inside as above..

I agree. BUT, I found this pic taken just a day after I purchased the PX and have seen others like it too as I said.

Wow. Talk about making things difficult for yerself. Why would anyone think that's a good angle for a spinning cable?

Clearly it's wrong and probably done by the same people who put their wheels on the wrong way round and wonder why it is so hard to get to the valves! LOL

It's been a long time since I've changed one, but can't you feed the cable through a hole in the fork leg? Rings a vague bell.....
