No idea really. But why not stay away from Halfords and go to a scooter dealer and get the right stuff?
I believe you're in Manchester? I know they're a bit backward up that way, but I'm pretty sure they have scooter dealerships.

SAE80 GEAR OIL is basically the same '30' oil you're looking for!

SAE 80 is NOT the same as SAE 30. One is a lot thinner than the other (I think 80 is the thinner of the two.)
I'd only use SAE 30, I'd never use a mutil grade for the very reasons it is a multigrade - I don't want an oil that the viscosity changes on once it gets warm.
The good news... I've used lawnmower oil in the past with no problems, although it was a temporary solution to get me home from a rally.

10 / 40 will be fine, been using castrol gtx in my p2ooe for 20 odd years, sae 30 is not a gear oil but a basic motor oil. (recomended by piaggio) which actualy changes to sae 20 when hot. Again fine, sae 80 is a hypoid gear oil, again will be fine. when picking one go for a mineral oil without additives, the scooter shops sell putoline and rock oil, but like nic said sae 30 lawnmower / chainsaw oil is the correct grade for a vespa.

I've used 10/40 and stripped my clutch plates in a month. Twice.
Only reason I don't recommend it.

thanks for the advice all, on the net Ive seen readspeed do putoline 30s, and 1ltr will do 4 changes. Its funny, Im quite new to scooters, but Ive had a few MZ 2 strokes, in the past, the factory reccomended ep 80s in the gearbox, but many owners, who do big mileges always use straight 50's which they say circulates in a cold gearbox quicker. anyway cheers again for the advice.

I only took the info from the Scooter Help website so Scooter Oil General Vespa Oil Change Resources Home Vespa Gearbox Oil Change A two stroke engine lubricates itself in two separate ways. The gearbox, clutch, and drive is lubricated by standard gearbox oil. There is no oil pump but instead the gears running in the oil manage to pass enough oil around the gearbox to lubricate it properly. Gearbox oil in a Vespa scooter should be changed about every 3000 miles with new SAE 80 gear oil, which is the same as SAE 30 motor oil. For some reason oil manufacturers have different viscosity definitions for motor oil vs. gear oil. This is a constant cause of confusion when buying transmission oil for your scooter. If in doubt remember that oil for car engines is crankcase oil and oil specifically for scooter transmissions is gear oil.. Below are directions for most large frame Vespas. These instructions generally apply to small frames Vespas as well but the filler and drain holes are in different locations.
