how do you know when the point needs replacement? any classic your-point-needs-replacement signs?
same ques for the condenser.
cheers.

Tricky one that Rudi..
Poor starting, occasional misfire, misfire when hot etc. would be the signs.
You can look at the points and see if they are gubbed, gap will be bigger than it should be, one face will be pitted, the other will have a 'pip',
Condenser not so obvious, personally, I'd replace as a matter of course when I replace points..

thanx bryno, points look nice and clean even closed them on a very fine abrasive water paper to clean their surface but come to think of it, im not sure thats the problem, cause faulty points will always act up no? anyway, just every now and then it takes more than the usual number of kicks: but it does start on 3rd kick most of the time so maybe it's the 40 year old carb... or one too many fuel molecule at that particular moment who know...

Points should be fine then, as the gap gets bigger through wear would be harder to start.. ditto plug gap, try setting plug at it's smallest recommended gap.
What you could do is next time it's hard to start, after a few kicks whip the plug out, if it's dry, fuel problem (evaporation etc), if it's drenched, may be a leaking needle valve flooding it whilst standing, or a more of a spark related issue..

Worth a look anyway, the bigger the gap, generally the harder to start.. hence set the gap at the smallest in the range given in the manual, and if you didnt check the gap on the plug when you first put it in, can be pretty sure it is to big anyway, out of the box they usually are..
